In your home, a three-prong outlet is grounded; the thicker, round prong on the plug is the ground post. If an appliance has a three-pronged plug, that means the appliance is supposed to be grounded. Therefore, you should never, ever, under any circumstances use an adapter that lets you plug three-pronged plugs into two-pronged outlets. Those outlets don't have the grounding capability that is required for safe operation of the appliance.
