Pulling our troops out of the area will accomplish the following

1. It will further the idea that the US will not stand up to seeing body bags come home. This has been a key argument of Ben Laden and co.

2. It will insure that the people who helped us while we were in Iraq will suffer for it. Just as the Vietnamese who helped us did.

3. It will allow the militants to state with some validity that they have defeated both the USSR and the US on the field of battle.

4. It will make Ben Laden the most admired and respected figure in Islam.

Don't get me wrong - I don't think we should have went to Afghanistan and Iraq in the first place. However, I do believe that there is no good was to leave without the above results.

No, they won't. If we are very fortunate, they won't.
The revolution we have started in Islam will continue and Islam will embrace freedom, the people will pull down their Islamic dictators and free speech will become a major goal, and with it, religious tolerance.
There's more than one reason to be in the Middle East. This is one of many.

No decision by a major government can be simplistically reduced to one factor, as much as opponents of any political persuasion might want that to be the case.

No, most Democrats are hoping that the THREAT of a troop pull out will force the Iraqi government to step up to the plate.
Until the Iraqi government solves it's problems, US troops will stand around with their thumbs up their @$$es getting shot at.

IMHO a troop surge does nothing because US troops are doing nothing. Playing "cop on a beat" is not a military function.

However, sooner or later (I hope) someone will figure out that it isn't the number of troops that is getting our guys killed, it's the number of miles on the road that gets them killed.

Pulling the troops out of Iraq will not solve the problems in the midle east. But letting the troops remain in Iraq wouldn't solve anything either. So, which do you choose?.

The problems in the ME will be there no matter what we do. What's important is that we do not financially bankrupt our country - one of the major prongs of the Bin Laden war plan. Bin Laden's specific intent was to bankrupt the US through continuous war. Frontline PBS.

No I don't think people believe that for a second. What people do believe is that "us" being there isn't solving anything either. So I think a lot of people have finally realized that sacrificing our own citizens for a cause that isn't improving is meaningless and wrong.

Look. Iraq is a total anarchic nightmare thanks to you guys and the Brits. The Middle East is more un-stable now thanks to your illegal and immoral invasion. People are dieing at the rate of a 1000 month. Say that out loud. 1000 a month. Sounds bad doesn't it? Thanks to you guys the Muslim world is far more paranoid and jumpy than ever. Thanks to you guys the Israelis are looking towards Iran as the next strike. Thanks to you guys Oil prices have soared. In my native Spain petrol is now a ridiculous price. When will you ever learn? You can't fight terrorism with an army. You can't fight ideals (no matter how wrong or evil) with Semtex and Tanks.
