An alcoholic is someone with a chronic, primary, hereditary disease which progresses from an early, physiological susceptibility into an addiction characterized by tolerance changes, physiological dependence, and loss of control over drinking. Psychological symptoms are secondary to the physiological disease and not relevant to its onset.
You can be sober for years & years & still be an alcoholic.

This is what it says in the dictionary: of alcohol, one addicted to alcohol.
This is what I think an alcoholic is though: First off I will say my step-dad (which is dead now because his kidney failed, from to much alcohol), second off it's a person physically and emotionally addicted to alcohol, third off I found this info on the computer "According to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD), there are nearly 14 million Americans who are considered problem drinkers (including 8 million who have alcoholism) and 76 million people who are exposed to alcoholism in family settings. Although these rates show a huge number of problem drinkers, they also show that people who live with alcoholic family members are not alone." I bet you didn't realize there was that many alcoholics in the world!
So in other words an alcoholic is someone that can't go a few hours without having a drink unless they are asleep. Just like my step-father he would start drinking about 2 or 3 hours after waking up in the morning and he won't stop drinking until he was past out first or just finally went to bed. Oh and usually an alcoholic is someone that gets very mad when they have no alcohol in the house!

An alcoholic is someone who depends on alcohol to function in daily life and can be anyone who drinks just half a bottle of wine a day to someone who drinks 2 litres of vodka etc a day. If they feel they can't do without it then being diagnosed as an alcoholic is not far away!

An alcoholic is someone who HAS to make alcohol part of his day....no matter what! This person wakes up in the morning, may have a cup or two of coffee then moves on to the beer...or whatever their alcohol of choice is. You have a few types of alcoholics....you have "functioning alcoholic" is someone who drinks himself to oblivion every day and night but gets up and goes to work and does everything he needs to do in his life.....then you have the "pathetic drunk". He's the person who can't hold a job....tries living off of people he knows.....just a completely irresponsible person.....then last but not least.....the catagory i fall into...."the binge drinker" this person is someone who doesn't drink all the time but when they do, they drink to make up for lost time....doesn't make for a very good scenario......that's just my opinion though....NOT EVERYONE IS YOUR TEXTBOOK CASE!!
And finally......I don't believe that crap about alcoholism being hereditary....my mother never drank and NEITHER did my father!! HELLO.....why is it then do i want to drink.....sporatically....but they still call me an alcoholic.....these people that write these reports are smokin crack.......they know that there's more to it than just wakin up and drinkin....they also know that there are more than one kind of an alcoholic,,,,but do you see them taking the time to sort the crap out?? Hell no....they "text-book" everyone!! Gotta love the gov't!

Its really shocking to know, that several people have died being 'silent' alcoholics, them having a problem without people noticing.
Different people can handle more alcohol than others, as different people depend on different things, like some people smoke - it can be dabated also that they too are 'holics' but it is traeted in a different manner, eventhough it ca\n cause serious damage also.

going out with freinds and haveing a few drinks is normal. going out or staying home just to get drunk is alcoholism.
the mindset is everything. if its to loosen up around others its not bad. if its to get drunk its not good at all.
