I have just been to Portugal and in one of the churches there were lots of pictures of Fatima and ornaments of her.
Can anyone please tell me who she is and what she represents?

Hi Dobbin, The pictures may have been those of Our Lady of Fatima . Our Lady of Fatima is no one else but Mother Mary who appeared to three shepherd children in a place called Fatima, Portugal in the year 1917. So, that is the title given to the Mother of God since She appeared in Fatima. For example, when Mary appeared to a little shepherdess in a place called Lourdes She is called ' Our Lady of Lourdes'.
When She came to Fatima it was with an urgent message from God which She wished to convey to the rest of the world through the three seers Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco. She came with certain requests and also warnings of chastisements from God if those requests were not obeyed. She also promised a miracle for all, especially the doubters and promised it in advance. On the day that the children said that the miracle would be performed, about 70,000 people had gathered, believers, doubters and atheists. Our Lady of Fatima is the title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary by Catholics and others who believe that she appeared to three shepherd children at Fátima, Portugal on the 13th day of six consecutive months in 1917 (Starting on May 13, 1917). The title of Our Lady of the Rosary is also used in reference to the same apparition; the children related that the apparition specifically identified herself as "the Lady of the Rosary". It is also common to see a combination of these titles, i.e., Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima (Portuguese: Nossa Senhora do Rosário de Fátima)

Patricia, Shannyn, Petros and everybody else who told of Our Lady the Virgin Mary of Fatima and her aparition to the three little shepherds are right. She's the saint patroness of Portugal, as like Our Lady of Lourdes in France , Our Lady Aparecida in Brazil , Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico, Our Lady of Czestokowa in Poland are the respective patronesses saints.

Fatima is the name of a place, not a person.
Fatima became famous for a series of apparitions by the Virgin Mary, in the begginning of the 20th century.
It has since become one of the main pilgrimage sites in the world.

Fatima is the daughter of Muhammad.
Portugal was under Moorish rule and this might be the connection of a Muslim reference in a Christian shrine.

Fatima was a Muslim princess who married a Christian man (knight, or prince?) and was taken to Portugal. She missed her home so much that her husband named the town after her. Later, the Virgin Mary made many appearances there.
