Starting back up the gym this week (shock horror), and I'm looking for maximum results (mostly weight loss but obviously want to try getting things toned along the way). I normally do 15 mins on cross trainer, some time on the treadmill and then 45 on the exercise bike. Then in between I do some work on my arms and legs and I do tummy toning exercises at home.

Which is the best way to do this?

weights first. muscles will be fresh so you will be able to work them harder and get better development.

also when doing weights you will use up your stored glycogen as energy so when you do your cv after you will burn more body fat.

it is good to have a 10 minute easy warm up on some cv equipment before doing weights though to reduce the chance of injury.

I think you need to do cardio one day, then weights another.

It is better to split the types of training, and also give the body recovery time from one type of 'stress' before piling it on again.

If you do weights a day (or two, depending on how serious the weights are) will allow the muscles recovery time and effects should be better.

The Cardio work every other day will be fine too -- but if you are just starting back -- easy yourself in to any exercise regime. Going too fast a the start can lead to discouraging minor injuries that interfere with developing a new successful routine.

I was advised to do 5 minutes on a machine like the cross trainer or bike to get my heart rate up then to do weights starting with the legs first and then back on the cardio for another 30 mins

the best way is to do weights before cardio since you body have the most energy at the beginning, after your workouts your muscle will be tired and it is the best time to do 20-30 minutes cardio. Don;t forget to concume protein before and after workouts.
