After reading these answers I see theres way too many who live in theoretical land. Theoretically no one should ever drive over 65, smoke, drink, have unprotected sex, or stick anything in their ear. With 300 mil. people in America its gonna happen. Problem is we have idiots who feel its their duty to stubbornly poke along in the fast lane pissin people off, causing traffic jams and accidents reasoning that "Hey, I pay taxes, I can use as much of the road as want." A good percentage will drive slower than the posted speed limit in the hammer lane reasoning " The sign says speed limit 65, not absolutely drive 65." These same ******* will poke along like Moses on single lane roads with their little power trip and floor it as soon as someone in the line of traffic piled up behind them has the chance to pass. When youre on the hi-way snailin along in the left lane and you see a big truck coming up, get off youre Joe citizen, I never break a traffic or any other law high moral ground and MOVE STUPID. Alot of you idiots still cant quite grasp that big trucks can only legally use the right and middle lanes. Is it really all that difficult for you to make that little tug on the wheel and move out the way or is their some other phsycological problem here. Little inferiority complex, hmmmm? Did somebody not let you be in charge at work today? Dont worry, you can control some evildoers in traffic on the way home.

actually, the sign says "slower traffic stay to the right"
AND the basic speed law is to not go any faster than it is safe.
That means, if it's raining cats and dogs and visibility is at an all time low, doing the speed limit may get you a ticket if your going faster than it is safe to drive. On the other hand, maybe the freeway is empty and the sun is shining and you put the pedal to the metal...as long as your not going any faster than it is safe, you probably won't get a ticket.
And those people who drive slow in the fast lane, are selfish idiots who need to move to the right lanes. Get out of the way dork! Oh yeah, and your wrong about that staying in the right lane crap, not in California, most of our freeways are 4-8 lanes wide on one side :)

First of all, it shouldn't be called the "fast lane", but "lane 1". The posted speed limit should never be exceeded, even when you're passing someone. Attitudes like this are why there are accidents on the highway and city streets EVERY SINGLE DAY. It never ceases to amaze me the blantant disregard for traffic laws. Try to argue with a cop that you were driving in the "fast lane" and that's why you were speeding. He'll probably laugh. Everytime you speed, you're decreasing your reaction time, increasing wear-and-tear on your car, burning (expensive) gas faster and making yourself more prone to an accident or ticket. So I ask you, why?

ive wondered that since i started driving. some reasons ive come up with over the years: -they dont like people driving fast and do what they can to slow em down. if they only realized the futility of this action. theyre not omnipresent. -they arent good enough drivers or r just too lazy to deal with merging traffic. -they want to drive w the cruise control on n as long as theyre the slowest car in their lane, they wont have to turn it off n hit reset. to the last 2 i say its a shame all of us have to suffer for the few, but they r the types that arent ever gonna care about the next person. -they r huge a h's who derive pleasure from others pain. thats why i never let the person going slow in front of me know that it bothers me. whether driving on a single lane or multilane highway. they aint gonna go any faster anyway. - they like to see all the people behind them while almost noones in front of them. i guess it makes em feel like a leader. or that theyre controlling the situation. how sad that they have such little real control in their lives. -in my state its a law to keep right except to pass. so many think speeding is breaking an important law but this law isnt. they can choose the laws everyone has to obey. -the worst is when theyre going like 5 mph faster than the speed limit but still slower then the traffic to their right. i was a passenger in a car being driven by a girl doing this. i asked her why, n she said 5 mph over was fast enough. i pointed out that she was breaking the law, and was ok with anyone else breaking the law, just as long as it was within her perameters. like its her place to say to everyone, "you can speed, but only as much as i say". to her credit she saw my point and agreed w me, n as far as i know doesnt drive like that any more.

The reason there are accidnets on the road is because people drive too slow, today I was going 65 mph down the highway to come upon some idiot going 45 mph in the lane adjacent to the "fast lane" and this idiot was doing this on a 4 lane highway, if anybody wants to go that slow get on the far right hand lane. On the Autobahn people go over 100 mph all the time, but you rarely hear of accidents. So the faster you drive doens't neccessarily mean there will be more accidents.

thats not the problem it is the fact that they do not pass anyone if your in that lane pass and move over that is what it was intended for the morons that run th same speed as the car next to them and take 12 miles to pass get behind them. On the other hand when the freeway is packed there is always some jerk that wants the space your in even though there are 4000 cars in front of you. Why do you expect us to pull over and move out of your way
Too many self important people on cell phones in a hurry
I wish I was self proclaimed royalty

Personally I think if a person is driving at least the speed limit, they should be able to drive in any lane they want. I'm with most everyone else here, that I think the "slower traffic" thing means 'less' than the posted speed.
The "fast lane" doesn't mean drive as fast as you want, and more importantly - itimidate people in front of you. I could care less if people pass me, but it should be done in a safe manner.

Slow traffic stay to the right. That sign does not imply it is Ok to pass the posted speed limit if you go to the left. It's never OK, it kills people. So, if the lead car is doing the posted speed limit they are going as fast as they can and there fore you should have no care because you can't pass them. Slow traffic refers to people doing less than the speed limit. You should be thankful to every care that's caused you to stick to the limit. Your life has probably been saved many times, along with the lives of innocent people.

We should remember that the fast lane is for passing only, and everybody should be in the right lane, unless they are passing the slower traffic.
