Do you need the promise of eternal reward or the threat of eternal torture to refrain from causing suffering?

It's one way to get people's attention. It's not the best reason to follow a religion. I think people should carefully think through the reasons that they want to follow any belief system and not just because they're afraid of being punished for not believing.
