It really is no big deal. It is only making all states have tighter rules for issuing ID. The computer links from state to state have been tightening up for years anyway.
Do people really think that the government couldn't find out everything about a person anyway? Bank records, credit cards, property, drivers license an the list goes on. For christs sake...... cell phones are GPS enabled (unless you turn it off) so if they want to find you they can. So basically if a person is not doing anything wrong it is a good thing.
Who it really is going to inconvienience is illegal aliens.

Mandatory state ID has already been found unconstitutional by the SCOTUS in the Beverly Hills Walkman case in the 1970s. Federal mandatory ID is even more unconstitutional. The "Real ID Act" tries to get around this by making States enforce mandatory ID, but I don't see how it can pass constitutional scrutiny. Read the 9th Amendment. Even King George III never made colonists carry ID. Slaves had to carry ID, but no one imagined that a government would force free citizens to carry what would amount to a permit to exist (your existence can always be revoked.) More and more states have already rejected this unfunded mandate to make state DMVs federal ID agencies. Contact your state legislators today.

Well, what is there to think about it. You probably have a "federal ID card"...ok its not federal, but i can be easily converted to one and you need it to legally drive a vehicle.....it's your drivers licence. There is allready vast amouts of data out there about you. all they need to do is link up the info to your driver licence and it will serve as the "federal ID card". In some states, if an officer demands to see your drivers licence, even if you are not operating a vehicle, you need to show it, or face being detained at the station till your identity can be verified. no you dont need an this id card, but life would be much harder without one.

i am in two minds about this!!-one half of me is saying "great-it should help control illegal immigration (and legal immigration for that matter)" but the other half is saying "but hold on a minute-isn't it the governments fault they have to be implemented anyway?". we also will live with the threat our fair and beautiful land is going to become a police state (if it becomes compulsory to carry the cards the police or any other government official can demand to see them-or face arrest). also there is the cost -at an estimated £100 per card surely if it were the governments idea to implement them then it should waive two thirds of the cost-as it stands now poor old joe public (thats us mugs!!) will have to find all of the cost.

That should be the same for Drivers Licenses as well.
There is something wrong when you can't buy beer in another state without that states ID card or drivers license.
I am quite suprised they didn't do this earlier.
Same with cash. Imagine what it would be like if each state had it's own cash.
