The SOUL according to many religious and philosophical traditions, is the ethereal substance — spirit (Hebrew:rooah or nefesh) — particular to a unique living being. Such traditions often consider the soul both immortal and innately aware of its immortal nature, as well as the true basis for sentience in each living being.

The term SOUL is used in two senses: it indicates the ego and the spirit-body. In ancient writings man is described as a triune being: body, soul and spirit. According to this the soul is just as much an envelope, animated by the spirit, as the physical body is an envelope for the soul. At death the soul withdraws and continues to function in the spiritual world. Astral body and soul are almost equivalent terms. ...

The soul is an immortal and spiritual body of light, the essence of which is Satchidananda and Parasivam, eternal, uncreated and identical with God Siva. The soul animates life and reincarnates again and again until all necessary karmas are created and resolved and its essential unity with God Siva is realized. The soul is the atman of the Vedas.

From the Greek word "psuche" -- breath. This word has a variety of meanings, including: the seat of personality, the individual or person themselves, the immaterial component of a human, etc. Among Christians, dichotomists believe that a person is composed of a body and soul; trichotomists believe that a person consists of a body, soul, and spirit. Both argue their cases from biblical passages.

The souls of individuals were created for companionship with God (the Whole). The pattern that God used to create souls was the pattern of God's own Spirit. The spirit is life. From the spirit, the mind builds patterns. From the mind, the physical creation is the result. This is how the spirit, the mind, and individuality, became the pattern for souls. This is how cause, action, and effect became the pattern for everything. First there was the spirit (the first cause); then there was the action which withdrew spirit into itself; then there was the resulting individuality of God.
The spirit of the individual existed before their soul was created. The spirit keeps the knowledge of its identity with God. The soul has the ability to experience the activities of the mind in a manner separate from God.
The nucleus of the soul was the balance of positive and negative forces that are equal in power. These forces produce harmonious activities: the positive initiating, impregnating, and thrusting forward; the negative receiving, nourishing, and ejecting. The steps of this evolutionary process are also the stages of the thought process: perception, reflection, and opinion.
Thus, the soul consists of two states of consciousness: (1) the spirit which bears a knowledge of its identity with God, and (2) the soul which bears a knowledge of everything it experienced.

The Bible says the soul is the Blood. If you dispute this, consider the practice of picking up every piece of a person's soul following a terrorist bombing in Israel.
They have special recovery teams whose job it is to pick up every bit of the souls of the persons killed, so that it can be buried. If it has soaked into the roadway or building structures, they will chip every bit out. What they are chipping out is the blood. Now, do you claim the ancient Israeli belief that the soul is the blood is false, along with the old testament of the Bible?

Every soul atman is a powerful source of energy... God Almighty himself in minuscule form. If a grain of sand is a soul atman... the whole mound is God Almighty. If a single piece of puzzle is an individual soul atman... the completed puzzle God Almighty himself.
As per Bhagavad Gita... the most sacred document of Hinduism... the doctrine given to mankind by Lord Krishna (an Avatar)... every soul atman is on its cosmic journey to purify itself of the impurities within. It is not within the capacity of a soul atman to remove the dross within. It needs a cycle of manifestations one after another... only then it comes back to its original pristine pure form.
The journey of the soul atman... the cosmic life cycle of the soul atman is for the prime reason of removing the dross within. Ever since the big bang... all souls atmans scattered all over the Cosmos... they gathered impurities on their cosmic journey. To remove the impurities these souls’ atmans manifest a series of life forms.
Every soul is a very powerful source of energy. Within the core of the soul temperatures exceed trillions of degrees centigrade. Yet, it coolly lives within the confines of our heart. It is our soul atman within that keeps the heart beating on and on. No matter what... our heart never stops beating until the death of the body occurs. The moment our soul atman leaves... The body decays and dies.
Our soul atman is made up of energy that never grows or dies. It remains as it is! Only when mired in impurities... it manifests bodies to clear itself of the dross within. The whole Cosmos exists because souls' atmans exist. In absence of souls' atmans... the existence of God Almighty and the Cosmos gets negated. Though every soul atman is beyond the capture of the senses and the mind, the knower of Bhagavad Gita becomes enlightened (gains kaivalya jnana). It is then the complete doctrine of the Cosmos becomes clear to one. More on Soul Atman - http://www.godrealized.com/hinduism_atman_soul.html
