If it's any comfort, a lot of people with a lot of experience can't pull off the transition from lovers to friends. It's always very difficult. It's also as natural as breathing that you're going to grieve this loss, and there's no healthy way to avoid it. It's the cost of falling in love in the first place, and the crazy thing is that most people are willing to pay it even when they know how high the price is.

I'm sure other answers will tell you to exercise, think happy thoughts, put it behind you, etc. Exercise is good, but unfortunately there's no healthy way to bypass the process of grieving. Spending time together as friends makes the process more difficult because the reminders of what you had are in your face. When you can look at him in a more neutral light it's somewhat easier to be friends.

People out grow each other from time to time. You however; are learning a valuable lesson; never close the door, unless you mean it. Now that you two are no longer a item; but only friends; stick to it.

Perhaps it will work out for both of you as friends; or as a couple. In any case, when we break up from someone, if it was true love; you are more than likely to have residual feelings; that in time will fade away.
