The dumb dinner/supper is usually practiced during Samhain. It is a simple meal with place settings for both the living and those who slipped away to Summerland during the last year. All are silent (dumb) during the dinner so they might think on those who are with us in thought and mayhaps in spirit. I usually place a card at each place at the table with names. I usually do this with candlelight, but if there are children I have more and other light and I allow them to both light the candles on begining and snuff them on ending.
In our tradition, at the end of the meal we all stand with our wine or juice glass. Each person next to an empty place speaks a toast for the departed by name. When we have toasted with a sip a Child removes the empty place setting from the table and takes it to the kitchen. When the child returns we toast the next, until there are no more empty places at the table.

Then we have a desert to celebrate the year to come with stories and song, and, the children that grow amongst us.
