i am really getting pissed off at my dog. he barks at every person he sees and every dog he sees from a while away. i am very desperate to get him to stop. do not give me the usual 'say NO' IT IS NOT WORKING. my neighbours said that if she hears him back one more time she'll call animal control and take him away. please give me a fast, effective way to stop his barking. i have had patience with him for a year now but it hasnt stopped. he is a jack russell, very hyper and i cant catch him

he also barks when we enter the house, leave the house, when someone is knocking at the door, when he hears another dog barking, when he wants attention....etc

and please don't give the usual 'if you can't afford something for your dog, then you shouldn't own a dog' i realise the commitments needed to maintain a dog but i just dont think obedience school is necessary. i want to train my own dog so he's in his environment

try a muzzle...I know some think It's mean but it doesn't harm the dog. and if the jack Russell is more than a year old obedience school would be almost pointless... remember you have an extrermly smart dog and rewarding his silence will work quite well. Also you said you can't catch him... jack russell's are natural born hunters and if not leashed tends to take a scent and run off.

Sometimes the best methods are the controversial ones. Purchase a abs anti barking collar. It sprays a small squirk of citronella oil at the dog everytime it barks. Within a matter of days your dog will quickly learn to be quiet.
Please note that you will need to refill the spray and check the battery daily and you should take it off when your dog is inside at bedtime. Also see the bark busters website. They have a great pack that you can use to let your neighbours know that you are actively trying to do something about your over excitable dog. The pack is free to download and has some good tips for you and your dog.
The ABS bark collar is very good and safe. Citronella oil is a natural repellent and it distracts and annoys your dog, but be sure to fit the collar properly.
If you are not going to try everything including a bark collar (which in the citronella spray variety is not that inhumane and is infact endorsed by animal welfare organisations) you will not fix the problem. Your dog is bored and needs more attention, space, and exercise. A change in diet can help as the preservatives in some dog foods can cause hyperactivity especially in small dogs.

As someone who lives next door to constantly barking dogs...
I think it's time to call in a professional dog trainer. Or go to obedience classes. Especially since you can't even CATCH your dog. You need professional help.
Please try not to be angry with the dog -- he's only doing what comes natural to him.
Also, if the dog is barking from INSIDE your house, I don't think the neighbor will get anywhere with her complaint. Unless you live in a condo or something... I'm not sure about this, though, maybe you should check on local laws.
Good luck!

My Schnauzer had a barking problem and it would get to be too much, I took to going 'face to face' with a grip on his beard and givng a very loud "No barking" command until I saw the ears go back into submission. Works most of the time. He dislikes water and that is the second and most effective remedy. Initlially I would give the vocal command and if he continued he got the water thrown on him. A container of water set near him (ears go submissive) even with other barking dogs nearby, he is quiet. A tablespoons worth splashed in front of his is plenty now.
At nite, I investigate the compound when he barks and take him on a leash to inspect the sidewalk/exterior, always with praise and a personal calm down time if warranted.

sounds like a normal dogs. Throughtout my life ( all 16 years of it) ive had 6 dogs and every single dog, dog after dog after dog, barks at every noise or new people. I think its just dogs. Dogs being dogs. Id be happy if I wernt home and they reacted to a noise( potential stranger) plus its probably a natural reaction. New people, because its a reaction too. Sometimes when i wear differnt clothings or make loud noises my dogs bark. Im fine. If I botehred about it i usually use the old news paper scare tactic but meh dogs be dogs.

if your neighbor says she is going to press charges than you might want to resort to punishing your dog a bit harsh. But if she decides not and only wants to report the dog then Animal Control can only warn you but cannot do much else.
In my neighborhood EVERYBODY OWNS BARKING DOGS. so well all just got used to it. thres probably roughly 20 dogs on my block. I can hear them in my backyard sometimes

fast and effective?------bark collar.........but not recommended!
Recommended?--------obedience training.
As for your additional details.......these are the usual times that a normal dog barks! Maybe try more excercise to wear him out a bit!
I'm sorry....I'm a bit confused.....people are giving you their answers that you don't want to hear? Why are you asking a question that apparently only you know the answer to????

there is always doggy training school.
I take it your dog loves doggy treats. When you see he is going to bark take out a treat, hold it above him and say " no "
if he stops give him the treat. after a while he should stop. atleast thats how it worked with my dog
