Well, it becomes toxic if the remaining food item is still left in the can due to rust and this would cause food poisoning. Store the remaining in a plastic container, then refrigerate them. This would keep them longer and being left in the can.

Can food be safely stored in metal containers?
Leaving fruit juices, tuna fish or other canned fruits and vegetables in the original metal can is not recommended. Acidic foods can interact with the metal, imparting a metallic taste to the food. To avoid this unpleasant experience, transfer leftover foods or juices to seal able glass or plastic containers. If a product stored in a can is accidentally tasted or eaten, the food may taste bad but it will not be dangerous.

Yes. actually you should never store anything in a metal/tin/aluminum container in the frige. Some foods can have a chemical reaction to the metal, and cause these "toxins". Just for fun....put a spoonfull of tomato paste onto a piece of aluminum foil...it BURNS holes into it. :)

That is untrue -they do not become toxic. Some products do interact with the tin in the can but it is not harmful or toxic.

Yes, this can be true and can happen, even under refridgeration. Opened food can at least still become stale in the fridge. It's better to keep it covered.

Yes...the metal causes the food to become toxic, and it can make you VERY sick!! My grandmother did it w/tomato sauce, and poisoned the whole family.
