You are right, you can't undersdtand an author without reading his works. So I read the Bible, I have attended church, I have associated (and still do) with Christians. I have seen the bigotry, hatred, racism, violence that many (not all) Christians carry out in the name of your God, those who do not practice what they preach. I don't think I could be more open minded to the fact, however, God does not exist, there is not evidence (and a book is not evidence), there is no need for a god. It is just the way it is.
This week there was a letter in our state newspaper from a Christian who said the reason why Australia is in drought is
"We have allowed many abominations into this once Christian nation. The legalisation of abortion, the legalisation and glorification of homosexuality, the proliferation of pornography are just three of our "wicked ways". Our elected leaders are supposed to make laws that are a guide for high moral living, but instead have legislated to accommodate those who demand the lowest moral standards..." ("Drought is God's Way" The West Australian, Tuesday 27th April 2007)
As you can see, that letter is just full of the love thy neighbour compassion preached by Jesus.
I thought Christian Fundementalism was a plague only affected by the USA. Quick someone make a vaccine, it is spreading around the world. Noooooooo.......

You seem to assume that because I don't believe in God, I have shut myself off from "Love, Light and Truth." Nothing could be further from the truth.
I love. I try to love everyone I meet in some way or other, whether it's through service, admiration, or just paying attention. My life is full of light and darkness, and beyond those things there is the truth, that which is. When I stop interpreting and trying to understand I find that whatever is happening right now is truth.
I try to be as open in both heart and mind in every moment as I can. The fact that I don't believe in a god doesn't hinder this at all.

So you are saying that "open minded people" do not believe in God.
"Open minded people" by your definition seems to mean some sort of tree-worshiping, dirt-footed hippie who heralds the power of crystals... or some such notion you have created.
A truly "open minded person" will tell you that all things are possible. It is possible that God exists exactly as you describe, but it is equally possible that there is no god, gods or god-like force.
An "open minded person" will not say god does not exist. They will say that it is just as possible that there is a god as there is not a god.
So until there is proof positive either way, everything is equally possible.
And also, God is not the author of the Bible. Man is. Reading the bible only tells us more about Man, according to your "Would you claim to understand a great author without first reading his book?"

both extremes are closed-minded. You have to be when you make your decision. But at least atheists are always open to new EVIDENCE. Your argument makes sense for atheists to turn agnostic, but not christian. There are other ways to become "a new creature full of love and have the power to overcome the evils around them". This is called growing up to most rational people. And most forms of spirituallity that aren't christian have power in them, or they wouldn't still be around.
If God is truth, and the bible isn't all truth, then the bible isn't all God. case closed.
Terrible post.

Your points are a bit trite. First you set up a straw horse and prove that people aren't open minded if they do not agree with your conception of reality.
Descriptions of god and the Easter bunny are similar, he also has attributes similar to Santa. He also has some of the same behavior as Hitler. God is described in many and contradictory ways. The one thing God isn't is measurable.
The whole premise of religion is fear of death and eternal punishment, which is nonsense.
Your suggestion that Christians just want to be nice is a bunch of baloney, look at Pat Robertson and Jerry Fallwell, Jesus Fan Club leaders who recommend killing and robbing. Nice guys.
I tried the god thing and opened my heart and found peace, found love, and found that I could have it without fear, hatred or hypocrisy.

They who close their minds to the possibility of God say they demand proof that there is one. This puts them closer to being agnostic but they live in blindness demanding proof that is all around them. They cannot see the miracle of God in a newborn babe. They cannot see the miracle of God in the beauty of a mountain meadow or a spring leaf. They live in darkness by their own choice but, hopefully, one day someone will open a door a little and "The Light "will shine in.

Of course it all depends on who it is that is in us... as there are many spirits and the One we are interested is in the true God's spirit (active force) which is very much at work in those seeking Him and yes! indeed! He draws close to all who take that first step to draw close to Him... and do the best that they can to worship Him in spirit and truth... John 4:24. Remember who pulls the string for a little while longer to understand why it is so difficult for the majority on earth to accept the basics of the truths about a God they cannot see when they have all of the blings-blings of the god of 2 Corinthians 4: 4 in front of their eyes constantly!!!
Thanks for the great thoughts!

My spirit friend, know not of just words, nor understand of many others! God, Jesus, Moses, John, Peter, names given by humans here on earth. As of the Native American Indians, who look up among the Heavens and call upon The Great White Spirit within the blanket of stars to guide them, and white does not mean color of the skin, but as pureness, as like the rare white buffalo. As within the Holy Words with any Bible, Jesus in a white robe, Moses with long white hair and beard. The spirit is within many here on mother earth, as with other worlds. Even the animals have their own spirits, given to them by the Creator of all things! Our spirits, with our souls are like time travelers thru out space and time, learning as children. But the Creator has already laid out the plans of the Heavens, such as a builder would read the blueprint before building. Once designed and build, one must accept its plan, or destroy it, and rebuild! As with the great flood, as with the coming of the fifth world of souls to bring back as it once was before, or as you may understand the great purification. Your body is your temple, look up into the Heavens, with spirit & soul and ask for your guide to the correct path to follow !! All answers will be given, if only one asks from the heart !!

Why should anybody with half a brain try to believe in something for which their is no evidence for and for which the story is completely far fetched? So far fetched only a closed mind would believe it.

LOL, yeah right.
Do you realize how arrogant and condescending you are? To say that someone who after deliberation has decided that they're atheist or agnostic just hasn't bothered to "open their heart" is the height of arrogance.
Get over yourself, not everyone has to think like you, feel like you or reach the same conclusions on spirituality as you.
It's sad that you think they do. That's a symptom of real insecurity, that you desire everyone to think like your herd.
