Oh, absolutely! The rooms of AA are full of people who drank only beer or wine! In fact it's funny; people will talk about they were able to deny they were alcoholic for a long time because they "only drank beer" . . . never mind that they were drinking a case every day, which is the equivalent of 24 shots!

Like most of our society, the world of alcoholics has a pecking order. Let's call the Wine Cooler drinkers the serfs. The cheap beer & wine swillers would be peasants. The top-shelf elite members are the single-malt Scotch crowd.
To really be respected as a serious alcoholic, one needs to spend time in each level, much like a band having to play in the crappy bars before they get to play the big venues.
Yes - I'm sure there have been some 'flash-in-the-pan' beer or wine celebrities, but they aren't memorable.
In short, yes.

Have you never heard the term "wino"? For alcoholics in the skid row areas of most cities one of the most popular drinks is reall cheap port wine because they believe it has the greatest amount of alcohol for the dollar.
A popular brand is something called MD20/20. It is 20% alcohol and very cheap. I hope neither you nor I ever drinks it.
Yes, there are a lot of winos who are alcohilics. I also know that it is common for hard liquor alcoholics to switch to beer thinking it is softer and won't get them drunk. Not true. Often they gain weight and go back to hard liquor. Some eventually decide to quit drinking altogether. That's the best way.

Yes, there are many.
Remember, there's the same amount of alcohol in a glass of wine or a beer as there are in a shot of liquor.
So it's quantity, not quality.
You will certainly get just as drunk on good wine as you can on cheap booze.
If you drink a six pack each night, or finish off a bottle of wine, then thats just as bad as drinking straight liquor.
I can't name anyone off hand, but know some through personally witnessing friends getting smashed daily on beer or wine.

If you can not live without alcohol, ANY type of alcohol, then you could be dependent on it. Alcoholism is a dependency...
I know of alcoholics that would drink mouthwash and pure vanilla extract when they could not get other alochol.
