I actually think that's a great idea. My husband plans to do the same thing as he is adding onto his skull tattoo (he was born on Halloween) and wants to do the grim reaper. He's adding a funny twist that you would only get though if you watch Monty Python's Meaning of Life. "It was the salmon mousse" will be written underneath.....
I really love that whole grim reaper thing so I say go for it, but have an artist draw it up for you to add some special touches and make it your own unique tattoo.

I have 2 black rose tattoos-- black roses symbolize death, dying, something being gone. I like the hourglass idea a lot-- and the grim reaper sounds pretty cool.. If you don't want to have to explain your tattoo to everyone, the grim reaper would best describe what you're going for.
Good luck!

well I have always wanted a double phoenix. This in some countries stands for dying and rebirth. I know you are not looking for a rebirth type of thing, maybe a symbol of impermanence. I know the cow skull stands for impermancence in some Native American cultures. The idea of grim reaper and hourglass is a nice idea. I would not recommend putting it on your neck though! Unfortuneately we live in a very judgmental world.

I think your idea sounds great, I like the idea of the grim reaper (death) holding the hour glass as time slips away and he seems to be on the waiting end of it!

Thinking on the Grim Reaper got an image in my head of the man in question with a grinning skull and his hand extended with the world poised above his hand...

sounds like a great representation of life and how fleeting it is. i got a skull to memorialize two friends but also as a reminder that death is just around the corner.

get the words 'memento mori'
Memento mori is a Latin phrase that may be freely translated as "Remember that you are mortal," "Remember you will die," or "Remember your death". It names a genre of artistic creations that vary widely from one another, but which all share the same purpose, which is to remind people of their own mortality.
