I have put on many fishing seminars for kids and I have learned that 1 hour is max for most kids.I give a short instructional speech while showing and telling about safety then baits and tackle used then we head for the hands on stuff.I have rods setup to practise cast with then we move to baiting and so on...!
I think the books are great I sold small soft back books for the kids to read and color in at my store! They also have tips and tricks and teach safety and all the fun stuff!

Kids get bored easily. If they are not catching fish within the first 30 minutes, they'll lose interest. So take them fishing where there is plenty of opportunities to catch plenty of small fish. Kids like constant action. On Long Island, usually a parent will take his/her kid snapper fishing. It's easy and there are plenty of them.
