Crusty is right, this one is one tough call. Gans was one of the best of his or any era, and we have the two Pryor fights that paint a picture in our minds that Arquello just didn't have what it took. The real question is Gans vs Pryor, because you have to figure if Gans could take Pryor, he could take Arquello. Richard is right, Gans could have taken Pryor and by default also got to Arguello. Gans fought in an era of toughness that seems to be lacking in modern boxing. Pryor was a through back of sorts with a great chin, and probably as tough as any of his day. Gans gets the edge in the blogbaba's mind on toughness over even the likes of Pryor. I think Joe would have more than held his own against Arquello, Leonard, Hearns, Pryor and Camacho. I don't think Joe would have got past Hagler, Marvin would have done a Mugambi on him, Hagler was as tough as they come in any era. Great question.
Gans by KO in 12.

First African-American world champion
This is the problem I have in ranking fighters that fought before 1920's or putting them in Dream Bouts. I look at their record and see if I recognize their opponents.
In my mind no doubt he overrated in the top 5 by Ring Magazine
Gans was a natural Light wt and Arguello was a natural Feather wt. who did move up. Gans was not a great puncher and Alexis was. Arguello's punching power overcomes Gans "so-called" greatness to obtain a majority decision in this bout.

Gans was a heavy puncher and would not back up from a slug fest. Arguello would get tagged early in the fight, have the heart to weather the first 4-5 rounds while dishing out a little punishment of his own, but would get TKO'd in the eighth round. Gans - pound-for-pound - is one of the greatest of all time.
