We are the world's bully. You know like the big kid that steals lunch money from the little kids and thinks it is OK because he is bigger. But, other countries, such as North Korea want nukes to protect themselves from us. They know we don't invade countries who are able to defend themselves.

Well the US is allowed to have nukes because they invented them. They were the first ones to have them, thats why they are allowed to have them. Is there any rule stating that they can not tell other countries they can not have nukes? No, then thats why the US is allowed to tell others not to have them while they have them. Has any other country ever used a nuke against another country, other than the US? No, so only the US fully understands the responsibilities of having them.
Just because you have a big gun, doesn't mean you want your neighbour with the mile long criminal record to have one to, so as a good citizen you tell them. If you buy a really big gun we will shoot you with our big gun before you can use yours on someone we like. So there's another war there. If you don't feel that a countries responsible enough to have nukes, you tell them, preferably before they get them. After would defeat the purpose of telling them not to get them. LoL. My question would be if they don't plan on using nukes, why do they need them? Leads me to believe that they have intent on using them. Thats why we don't want them to have them.
The US also understands that once Iran, North Korea, and others gets nukes they are more likely to use them. It's called more countries with their finger on the button, not very much fun. So if they have nukes they will use them and they will cause more damage to the habitat that we don't need. Like testing, their gonna want to test out their new toy to see it go boom, and then try to build bigger and more powerful ones, and test them. The more of our not so close allies that have nukes tips the balance of power further to their side, and then when it gets to far over to their side, you won't like the outcome.
Think of it as a stick fight. 10 on your side, 10 on our side. 1 of the 10 on each side has a big stick, the others have a twig. (sticks = nukes = lots of damage, a twig = no nukes = no damage). So now on my side I'm giving all my people big sticks to beat your guys up with, why else would we have them. So now 3 on my side, and just 1 on yours. How many on my side get big sticks before you say something? Why are you just standing there not saying anything or trying to stop me from giving all my guys big sticks. Hence why the US says no to other countries, while having nukes themselves, and we should all be happy they do it. The US doesn't want to be on the side waving one stick against 10. It's called MAD. Mutually Assured Destruction. One launches, we all launch, and all life is dead, so why do you want more countries to have them. The more countries that have them, the more countries that can start the whole MAD process. LOL.

Originally the idea of nuclear non-proliferation was developed during the Cold War with Russia. The idea was to decrease the amount of nuclear weapons that both sides had, as there were already enough in circulation to blow up the entire planet a number of times.

Nuclear weapons can vaporize people instantly.

If you've ever seen pictures of the only 2 used in World War II in Japan (Nagasaki and Hiroshima) and the subsequent nuclear fallout and genetic mutations that ensued, it's easy to understand the need for seeking a 'peaceful solution' and nonproliferation.

Jimmy Carter (I think?) was awarded the Nobel Peace prize for the idea of non-proliferation.

It's a scary thought that ANYONE has that kind of nuclear capability, but the idea that someone can drop a weapon - at his or her whim (ie... a fascist state, fanatic, or mentally unstable sort) is truly scary.

Maybe you should be asking why WOULDN'T people want nuclear non-proliferation instead of why would someone want to stop it?

What do they teach in schools these days...

I agree with INREALITY01...while we Americans have had an Imperialistic past, please remember that so have nearly all of the other First World nations out there...including Great Britain, France, Germany, Japan, China, etc. Yes, America is the only country that has ever used an atomic weapon against another country, but being that we are a leader in the free world, it is more of our responsibility to see that other countries with a stable history and government DON'T go crazy with their nukes and use them against someone else simply because they don't like them....i.e. IRAN should NOT have nukes and use it against ISRAEL simply because they are totalitarian and anti-Semitic. Common sense that I happen to agree with.

The United States is a peaceful, non-aggressive and giving country that is responsible. There are many nations that are seeking nuclear weapons that would use them for blackmail purposes or turn those weapons over to terrorist groups that would use them.

It is in everyone's interest to keep nuclear technology from some countries. This should be quite clear.

Remember, the United States does more for the world than anyone. We patrol shipping lanes around the world and keep them safe so products can be delivered. We come to the rescue of countries after natural disasters. We free people from evil dictators. In the past, we saved the world from Germany and Japan. We invent technologies and medicines that help enhance the lives of people all over the world. We give foreign aid to many countries. We provide a military presence that protects many weaker countries from more aggressive countries. We do so much for the world, please remember that.

Hypocritical, maybe. But do you want that little Korean megalomaniac in a jumpsuit to have one too, just so we can rise above hypocrisy?

I don't like the idea of Hillary possibly having her finger on the button some day! As bad as it is, it is a reality. But we have so many more checks and balances than the average tin horn dictator state does. Even if the current leadership is "relatively" sane, the next head of state could be a lunatic like the one in Iran.

Lets keep them out of the hands of the maniacs, and then work on keeping them out of the hands of our own elected idiots.

We are a stable country with the to ability maintain our nuclear weapons safely and responsibly. We do not have an agenda against any country that we would like to actually wipe of the map. (Not like Iran wanting to wipe out Israel.)

Don't get me wrong there are countries that we dislike and would like nothing more than to see a change in there leadership, but we wouldn't nuke them. Even all the newly anti American countries out there would have to agree with that.

If we were going to be irresponsible with our weapons we had 50 years to do so against the USSR, and we didn't. That track record in my mind gives us the right to say to other countries that are trying to acquire nuclear weapons that they can't have them.

Because the United States would not strap them to children and put them on a school bus to go blow up a place. We need to keep nukes away from people who would do that and those who would not realize why we need to keep nukes away from people like that.

well our intentions are clear, and other countries aren't. you can't trust communist country to have nuke when they are known to kill people... but I agree if I was a president of some country I could care less what the US intentions are, I'm getting my nukes.

Bully.. LOL god you really are simple. Let me guess the bus you took to school was so short the front seat doubled as the back?

Listen moron let me help you out. Even the Chinese know that the idiot in N. Korea is certifiably insane. His dad was nuts and he has a Napoleon complex. Now run along and leave the world affairs to the people who have actually read up, studied and understand history. I'm sure it's time for you to go flip that burger or serve up some fries.
