Skizophrenics have a lower iq compared to others. This could be due to several things. Skizophrenia develops at an early age so it could be thought that most of their energy goes in to battling their inner demons and not paying attention in school. Once diagnosed many people may treat the skizophrenic with kid gloves leading them to believe that all they can hope for is management of the illness.

I work with skizophrenics on a daily basis. What I have learned is that all we have been told about them in the past including studies are mostly wrong and made with assumptions. There are many that have gone on to college and hold down jobs and families and there are many famous ones out there too.

Where are the People with Schizophrenia?

Approximately:

6% are homeless or live in shelters
6% live in jails or prisons
5% to 6% live in Hospitals
10% live in Nursing homes
25% live with a family member
28% are living independently
20% live in Supervised Housing (group homes, etc.)

I knew a guy about 10 years ago who was undiagnosed, but I believe schizophrenia fit him better than any other diagnosis (IMHO). He had conversations with invisible people and behaved erratically. However, he was a brilliant chess player and had some amazing insights. He also functioned academically as one with a "learning disability." It is very difficult to assess absolute intelligence of anyone. Schizophrenia isn't really a measure of intelligence but a diagnosis based on certain cognitive tests that show aberrant results compared to a representative sample. I'm sure that, among those with schizophrenia, there is a bell curve just like with any other "granfalloon."

While it does happen that occasionally someone with schizophrenia is very intelligent (eg. John Nash), most schizophrenics are of average to slightly below average intelligence. This trend shows up even in childhood intelligence testing before the onset of schizophrenia.

To answer your question simply, no.

If you are asking if schizophrenics are intelligent then....yes, some are. It has been shown that it is caused by a chemical imbalance and I found it interesting that when they did more studies they found that more often than not the percentage was very high for people who had been diagnosed to not have had a mom present or available in their lives. There are many causes but not all are known and it is still being studied. You can find more information at www.WebMD.com

I'm a schizophrenic and am the smartest person in the world! That is my delusion and I'm sticking with it.

Ahhhhh. No?
It is not related to intelligence or lack of it.
