Depending on where you live, you might have to deal with extreme heat at that time of year! You might want to consider a tent with airconditioning to start with. Afternoon receptions usually land around appetizer time and before dinner. Depending on what the occasion is you can plan on serving both hot and cold appetizers as well as have bowls of chips and dip or salsa around for guests to enjoy. Here are some other ideas:
1. Asparagas with prosciutto
2. Salami, cream cheese, and cornichon rollups
3. Lettuce bundles with Asian chicken salad
4. Potstickers and dipping sauce
5. Tortelini skewers with marinara sauce
6. Fresh fruit kabobs and yogurt dipping sauce
7. Mini orange muffins with sliced black forest ham and cream cheese.
8. Fontina and crackers or baguettes
9. Bagna Cauda (crisp tender veges with an anchovie dipping sauce)
10. Mini quiches
11. Bruschetta
12. Shu Mai with dipping sauce
13. Mini meatballs in barbecue sauce
14. Cocktail weiners in puff pastry with sweet hot mustard
15. Brie En Croute with caramel pecan sauce

Let's see:
One big item in receptions is to place food and drink where people will obtain them, and then move away to socialize. If you put things in the center of the space, people will camp out at them and block others while they munch. Put tables way on the perimeter. If doing a buffet, arrange the tables so that people can serve themselves from both sides.
Good parties are generally unstructured but with some currently trendy item to tie them together. So let's see, what's trendy now in food and drink: Mojenos and those fruit-flavored drinks that should not be called martinis but they are; good fusion cuisine like chorizo spring rolls or California rolls or abalone burritos.
You could do a world cuisine theme, for example find some boerworst and lamb kebabs for the grill, plus crusty bread, toss up a salad, and call it a South African braal. Or do a Chinese dim sum.

The cardinal rule of any reception is to place the food on the opposite side of the function to the drinks. This will ensure movement within the space that you are entertaining.
A great hit at a party that I recently catered for was the following:
Mini Hot dogs: I bought mini buffet type roles and cocktail frankfurts. They looked cute and were really successful
Fruit Skewers: I placed 4-5 pieces of different types of fruit on skewers and used a cut in half orange as an anchor for them to be stuck into. Looked great and bright and was served at the end of the party to cleanse the palette.
Meatballs: I cheated and bought various seasoned rissoles and divided them up into 8-10 pieces, depending on size. Rolled them into balls and cooked in the oven. Another hit and cheaper than buying them already made up.
Hope that helps.

For food, make it little and lots (unless people are going to be sitting down at a table). As it's outdoors, remember to have a contingency plan for the weather - too hot or raining - and insects - try citronella candles.
A good idea for serving is giving everyone mini picnic baskets, in the style of Yogi Bear.

set up a tent or tent like voile curtains to block off the area. use the xmas ice sicle lites to support the lighting when the sun goes down if you can get to a party rental try and rent a fold up wood flor so that people can dance or dont damage your grass. fold up tables with table clothes topped with your food in chafing dishes, decorate the speaker wires with fake ivy so they are disguised.citronella candles safely set at each table or where guests will gather. lots a finger foods or tapas so that they can have lots of little items to try to stimulate taste buds and try the fruit flower arrangements and without being cheesy some lotto tix strewn about just because it is a 7/7/07 party good luck day

Most important! Put a bug zapper about 50 feet away from where you and your guests will be!
