Alcohol is made by yeast. The process of fermentation is a technical way of saying "yeast eating sugar" and all that goes with that. When the yeast metabolizes sugar, it gives off waste just like you and I give off waste from what's not used from our food. However, instead of what we make as waste, yeast makes ethanol (drinking alcohol) and CO2 (carbon dioxide).

I would like to advise you that your teacher doesn't know what the hell he/she's talking about. You cannot make alcohol without yeast. If you don't have yeast, you will shortly have moldy sugar water. You also don't want to (and can't) get rid of the oxygen, as yeast need oxygen for respiration before they start fermentation. The carbon dioxide that the yeast produce will eventually drive off all the oxygen that they didn't use. As for getting rid of the excess carbon dioxide, you can use a soda bottle or juice bottle and just leave the cap on but slightly loosened. This should be enough to keep the pressure from building up and at the same time keep any unwanted microbes from finding their way in. Although is you're not drinking it, that last part doesn't matter. What are you going to be fermenting, just the table sugar you mentioned? EDIT: Oh...Recipe. Well, if you're not going to be drinking it, then the simplest way to do it would be to use sugar water. Boil the sugar water (a cup or two for a two-liter bottle will be enough), let it cool enough that it won't compromise the integrity of your fermentor (plastic bottle?), and then when it is cool to the touch, put your yeast in.

The basic ingredients involved are hops, yeast and water however a variety of others can be added to accentuate different tastes. Fermenting is the breaking down of sugar into alcohol, sugars are made up of Hydrogen, Carbon and Oxygen atoms which undergo a chemical changto become alcohol.

The yeast that ferment the sugar give off alcohol as a waste product of their eating the sugar. They burp carbon dioxide and poop alcohol. Now isn't that special?

Anything with sugar in it. Basically through the fermentation process the water molecules of H2O gain another oxygen molecule, making it H2O2. This one extra molecule is responsible for all the lovely side effect you see. You can make booze out of anything that has a sugar content, basically any type of fruit or grain.

H2O2 is hydrogen peroxide. Ethanol is C2H5OH.
