I can't think of anything additional that they can get from the image since I've already sent them my credit card number, verification code, etc., and they've already shipped the order, but maybe I'm missing something? It seems like a strange request, but perhaps they're using an outdated credit processing service.

The retailer says they don't need the image after all, the message was the result of an internal miscommunication. Thanks for the answers!

It is a little odd, but maybe not suspicious.
There has never been a need for the image of a credit card to be made. All you need are the numbers. Once upon a time when credit cards were new merchants used an imprinter to copy the card and had the owner sign the paper. The card had (and still has) raised numbers. When pushed against the paper a roller was run across it thus imprinting the numbers on the credit sheet and through the carbon paper to another sheet that the merchant kept. This kind of technology is still around, but it has been largely replaced by electronics.
If the merchant has your credit card number, the bank that issued it and the ID code on the back then he can charge anything you want to buy to that card. Including a copy of the front face of the card wouldn’t give him any extra data except a picture, for those few cards that carry a photo on them. The image would be too small to work with though and not needed with all the other information. I would ask the merchant why he needs a scanned copy of the face of the card. I would not give him a copy of the back of the credit card without first blurring out your signature though. That is the only piece of personal information that could be taken from the card.
The merchant's request is far from typical, but it seems to be legit, I can't think of any harm it would do. It would only give the merchant information that he already has; unless you are paying them through a service like Pay Pal that doesn't show the entire credit card number.
If this was a case of identity theft where the merchant is trying to make a copy of your card then all he needs is a blank credit card from that bank, which is easy for criminals to get. Even if he isn't trying to make his own copy of your card he doesn't have to get an image of the card. He has all the information to steal your identity, and if you gave him a shipping address he has even more. I understand why the previous answers are afraid of identity theft, but I don't see a valid case, since the only information that you haven't given him is your signature.

Do you have a checking account? Because if you do you can ask your bank to give you a debit/atm card and that works just like a credit card. i've had mine for 2 years now and I order stuff of line all the time since i'm in college and don't really have time to go shopping. It's also a very safe way because you don't have to deal with bad credit or whatever. but that's what I would say to do . and if you don't have a checking account get one and get a debit/atm card with it. it works with Victoria secret, eBay, American eagle, Hollister. what ever welse you can order on line. Good Luck :)

If they have already shipped the order then there is no way they can make you give them this. Also, I find it very suspicious that they would ask for it. Do not give it to them. If they persist report them to the credit card company. I would also keep a close watch on your credit card activity just in case. If you talk to a Representative from your credit card company they can suggest some ways to safe-guard your account against fraud.

Sounds like an identity theft waiting to happen. Honestly, if they've already shipped the order, what would they need with more info???? They typically get all the info they need and make sure the CC # is valid and make sure it goes through BEFORE they ship. I, personally, wouldn't do it. Trust your gut instinct on this one!

Noooo!!!! They could somehow make copies of your card and make fraudulent purchases. Also, if they have already shipped the order, then there is nothing else they need from you!!

Dont give it to them. There is absolutely no reason for them to have it. If they force the issue than buy your stuff somewhere else. It is not worth the trouble of someone stealing from you.

Looks suspicious. I suggest you drop business with them, and find a normal retailer.
