I think that is so great! I hope you plan to tell people or make an announcement at the wedding about that - I am sure people would think that is awesome!
Cupcakes are all the rage right now - so you can't go wrong with that. A nice cake would look great too. It's totally up to you.
Personally I would ahve another bakery duplicate the icing pattern on a layer cake.

OK i think you should do what you think looks nicer and simpler for you or the person who is serving the cake.In my opinion you should have a bakery make you another layer of cake and duplicate the original icing pattern. And if you make your final answer to that i would say have the cupcakes serve if you would like to be indifferent from other weddings. That would be awesome! Make it your best wedding!

If you have a real cake what would you feed your guest?
I DO NOT like the idea of cupcakes. This is your day a beautiful day that you and your husband to be will unite and share with your friends and family. Its just nice to have something for them to eat.
I would say a fountain will look good no matter what you do.
You can get a little round cake if you want to do a cutting of the cake.
You could have cheese cake for your guest. That is always another option.
Hhhmm
Enjoy the day do what makes you happy.
fountains are beautiful and if you get dry ice it will be all smoky...beautiful...and makes great pictures.

I would rather have the baker bake me a real cake but duplicate your mother's original cake design and pattern. This way, you can have your cake cutting ceremony and feed your new husband a piece of the wedding cake too. If your mother would be offended for not using her "fake" cake, maybe you can place her cake next to your real cake on the table, and tell all your guest you "love" your mother's wedding cake design so much that you must have the "exact duplicate" on your own wedding day. This will surely make your mother proud. I hope my suggestion works for you. BTW, have a lovely wedding and a delicious cake to go with it.

Have a very small cake made to be placed on top of the fake one that will be for just you and your husband.
The guests will be happy with a sheet cake that is already cut and put out on plates brought out from the kitchen or back of the room. You can then have your traditional cake cutting, etc.
The fountain can be an additional item on the cake table. It might be easier to set up alone than trying to balance a cake on it with success.
I'm having petit fours for my guests and a small cake for my husband and I to cut and shove into each other's face, nicely, of course!
Congratulations and good luck.

cup cakes have become a big thing in weddings recently, you couuld have a fountian, and choose some some cupcakes that are all frosted together resembeling a cake, have the baker remove all the wrapers, and you can still cut a cupcake the same as a cake. My husband and I were married last june, and we had cupcakes, insted of saving the top tier for our first aniversery we saved two cupcakes. Good luck, and congratulations.

If you want traditional cake cutting then you sure need real cake. cake fountain is a typical cake stand, real or fake cake would look OK. but if you feel like saving money, maybe try to bake your own cake. It's not that difficult. many recipes online that you can try out such as http://www.wilton.com
the cake fountain and cake topper you can find affordable ones in http://www.weddingstar.com or make one from craft materials.

Get a real cake!!! =)
Anyways, I don't get what you mean by a "fountain"... is that a water fountain or somesort of design pattern???? =(
I would suggest you get the real cake to serve (afterall, you do want the traditional cake cutting) at the reception though... 'cuz cupcakes are kinda cheapy and kiddie and will cramp your adult style. =)
EDIT: Ah, I can see why I am gettin' the thumbs down here (and so are other guys) because you said in your question: "girls out there..." and the fact that we're not girls!!!! =P
Lol. It's alright though, you can pick any best answer you want! =D

well you idea sounds really cute i think. but if you want a tradional cake cuting you can have mini cakes made to look like you moms fake cake( for your self and groom vridal party) and cup cakes to serve guest. this way you can have a tradional cake cutting on you mini cake and have a mini cake fountian made or teir that would be so cute and trendy and that way you could even have the bakery make a second wedding cake to freeze to eat next year
