heres the deal. im a waiter and one night a couple asked for the check. i gave it to the woman well actually slid it to her. the guy stops me and asks why i did that. i said i didnt know who would pay so i slid it to her to hand it to you. he says that you should never hand a woman a check because itll make her feel like a prostitute. in my mind, im thinking, they never taught me this in school or at work. what kind of thinking is this? what ideology is this from?

It is customary to give a bill to a man. It just is. I don't know about the prostitute part but really, if you are a waiter, that was just a bone head move. When in doubt, put it on the table between them and let them grab for it.

This guy was totally off base. First of all, he's telling you how she feels. (I'm surprised she's married to this guy.) Secondly, it is perfectly acceptable for a woman to pay. Goodness knows I pay about 50% of the time my boyfriend and I go out because it's just more fair that way. From a former server's standpoint, I would suggest to always place the bill in between them or at the end of the table. If there is any discussion about who's going to pay, you're out of it because you've placed it in "neutral zone."

That man sounds like a nutcase.

When I was a manager, I often entertained male customers at dinner and lunch. I always requested or got the check given to me, and I've lived on three continents in eleven countries, plus 18 of the United States.

Nowhere did I see or hear of the check going to the woman as indicating that she was a prostitute.

Nowhere.

Did he mean that it makes him look like a gigolo, maybe?

Never heard of that before.
When I was waiting tables I would put the check equidistant between the two unless one of them signaled that they wanted it. But that was because some gals got very prickly when I handed it to the guy and they'd take it out on me when it came to the tip.

And to think about it . . . . I wasn't under the impression that prostitutes paid to have dinner with the guy who they would sleep with . . . .

that is just silly...i have been handed the check on many occasions, and i never felt like a prostitute *rolls eyes*...i think if i were with him, the fact that he said i felt like a prostitute if i was handed the check would make me think that HE thought i was one....that would make me madder than anything....

i was a waitress for 10 years and i NEVER heard this silliness befiore...

the woman doesnt pay if she is a prostitute anyway, so, based on that...HIM paying would be more likely to make her feel like a prostitute...afterall, if he pays for dinner, he did just paid for her time ;)

this guy is obviously a control freak, and needs to pay to feel like a man....

I don't know where the idiot got that from. Prostitutes don't pay for anything, they get paid. Maybe he felt like a prostitute if the woman was assumed to be paying.

Personally, I've never even heard of that ideology, but what I usually did when I was a waitress is try to get it in the middle of the table, and don't face it towards either of them, face it towards the end, if you know what I mean.

no it would not make her feel or look as a prostitute. For if she were a prostitute she would not be paying for the meal he would. I would simply place the check in the middle of the table for future reference if you are unsure. God bless****

old fashioned thinking, one that is still strong in many men even today.

what you should do, cause I am sure you have seen women pay the tab at times.

is to put the check in the middle of the table or accessible to both evenly.

this way you are not making any refreences on your opinion on who is paying and who is not

The only explanation is due to his beliefs, he is the man of the household--so he gets the bill. You were just doing your job. Next time politley ask who will be handling the check. That way you wont be heckled by macho men with 'Women & checks phobia".

:)
