when not in 4 high or 4 low is the 2001 ford expedition still in automatic 4 wheel drive? the 4x4 switch has a A4WD and a 4H and 4L.

not exactly all time 4x4 but automatic, in other words, it uses the wheel speed sensors much like traction control to detect wheel slip and directs power to the other drive wheels as needed to maximize traction. I have heard that its rather slow and imperfect though. for the most part it will be RWD in this setting.

If you place the switch in 2WD then no its not automatic 4WD, but if it has the position that you are saying A4WD then yes it has the capability of being automatic 4WD, although it don't work worth crap. Buy a Jeep if you want Automatic 4WD, Jeep is the only manufacturer that actually has mastered the full time 4WD system.
