What should the first steps be? I always hear about groups or foundations being started but I don't know how to go about getting one off the ground.

There isn't a mentoring group in the area to serve the population which I am trying to help.

Katherin - I wouldn't start anything just to say I "did it." My question was a specific one - "How do I start a mentoring program." I didn't ask about the alternatives that you proposed for a reason.

Why do you need to start one? What's the point to that? So you can say you did it? Why not go with one that's already running and help them out?

If you need to start something, go to a local church and ask to use their facilities and get their help. Then you can have a base and some help, and you don't have to file paperwork to be tax-deductible or get a building license or anything. Too many people spend so much time getting all the papers in order that they never do the work they wanted to do.

Why not go with an existing one? The headache of 'starting' one (and any cost) is already done.
