Boonora is away with the pixies. Again. FNQ is hot and humid in December.

I would suggest the high country of NSW, around Kosciuszko National Park or the Alpine Park in Victoria. Although the highest elevations are above the treeline there are many area that have areas of forest interspersed with open grassy plains. Some of the areas in the northern part of the park would be ideal. The altitude makes things a little cooler.

Kosi Park Service site.

Another alternative is Tasmania - further south so a little cooler and some beautiful areas.

yes there is, especially on east coast of australia - plenty of rainforest up north Queensland - you have to do some research first on camping - some camping is not allowed any more cause of the drought and bush fires in December - summertime - and be aware of snakes, mozzies, crocodiles too if you should happen to camp in north Qld

around asheville, nc. mt. mitchell, i believe, is the highest mtn on the east coast. it's beautiful, has national forests, doesn't get extremely cold. sounds like it fits perfectly with what you want.
