There is so much that can be done to stop or at least slow down obesity rates:
~ban soda and sugary drinks in public places
~Sell dried fruit, nuts, etc. in vending machines instead of
cookies, chips, and candy.
~Have more commercials promoting outdoors activities
and not indoor stuff like video games, etc.
~Make healthy food cheaper at grocery stores because
right now, it's the junk food that's cheaper and a lot of less
fortunate families have to go for the cheaper food.
~Promote more walking...if you look at people in Europe,
they walk everywhere they go.
~Get rid of remotes and elevators and escalators in
places where it isn't necessary to have them.
there is so much more that can be done. This is just the starting point.

teaching kids how their body functions and nutritional food value of each food group.
not allowing vending machines w/soft drinks or other junk food choices. at school/ helping parents choose healthier restaurants not fast food -teaching parents what most of these fast food restaurants offer-high calorie foods.
kids need parents/teachers to guide them-at home allow 15-20 min of electronic game only if homework is done and if they go out to play a sport like soccer/bsktball or bike ride or younger kids can get parents involved. even a walk will benefit everyone. if everyone works together on maintaining a healthy lifestyle w/exercise the results will be rewarding.

I think that it's a hard question to answer because different people have different metabolisms and other problems as well. I am 25 and still the same size I was back in elementary school, high school and college. I'm barely over 5 feet tall and barely over 100lbs. I sit at home and eat junk food and don't eat veggies yet I weigh what I weigh. So it has little to do with sitting in front of the tv and more to do with other factors.

Why don't parents quit taking the easy way out of trying to feed their kids and learn how to cook a meat and two vegetable or a green salad. A REAL meal?
Feed their children fruits that they have to go to the store and pick out themselves instead of buying bags of candy that the kids pick out as they get ready to leave the store after buying all of those frozen pizzas and other microwave meals.
Get the kids out from in front of the computers and TV's and actually take them to the park to play and burn up calories as they are intended to do.
How many kids actually have bikes today?
How many kids actually play outside today?
Do kids know how to play Red Rover or Tug of War?
Do kids know how to play with Frisbee's anymore?
Everything that parents today want to do is take the easy and fast way out and drop by McDonalds,Burger King, or any other Fast Food Place just grab something up for the kids to eat on the way home or infront of the TV and computer so they can go about whatever it is they want to do.
How about regular healthy meals and less munchy food?
How about less candy, cakes, chips and cola's and more apples, oranges, bananas and water.
As I grew up I ate wholesome meals,my kids ate wholesome meals and my grandchildren eat wholesome meals and we all eat wholesome snacks and NONE of us are overweight. . . . .on the other hand,my brother and wife fed their kids nothing but burgers, pizza's,colas and junk and ALL of their children are obese and are starting to show signs of diabetes.
Let's all get back to the old fashioned way of doing alot of things, eating, ironing, saving money, walking, riding bikes, exercise and letting children run and play and ALL of us would be better off.

it isn't just fast food, have you read the labels on the foods in your local grocery? High fructose corn syrup is used in a huge number of foods, even bread! It is the high fructose corn syrup that is contributing the most to obesity in this country and it should be outlawed;
