Social anxiety can cause these feelings, which can also lead to severe depression,
http://www.socialanxietyinstitute.org/ds...
There is hope; I've been there, and still am there, it is a long, hard struggle. I recommend
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/cognitive_b... worked best for me, with mild anti-anxiety meds. I suffered from social anxiety for over 15 years. I've tried individual therapy, and group therapy and studied psychology for 10 years, as a profession, but also with the hope to cure myself.
Depending on your comfort level, you could go to a psychologist that practices CBT and specializes in anxiety disorders, seek a group therapy, or create one. Usually those that do attend the group therapy are a bit more high functioning because as you know, it can be difficult to speak in a group.
Another idea is to see if there are any local research studies being conducted that you could participate in.
The program that finally worked the best for me is this one: http://www.socialanxietyinstitute.org/au... and I was lucky enough to have a structured behavioral group to go along with it. Sometimes the people that actually attend this program come back home and form groups.
I recommend a mild anti-anxiety med, and a beta-blocker (it will reduce shaking and tremors enormously, but only use in extreme situations) in addition to CBT therapy.
Any questions, let me know ... I can't tell you how much this has improved my life!

Hi I am taking medication for anxiety problems. I do suggest you go to your Dr. or a Dr. and they will give you what is best for you. The one lady said zoloft but that is an antidepressant. Not an anti anxiety pill. I take one called Lorazapam~ generic for Ativan. They just help take the edge off but also lets you sleep better at night. I wish you luck with whatever you decide to do. But any type of medications for this will be in a prescription form....so you do need to see your Dr. Best of luck and God Bless!

Antidepressents are for depression and anxiety. They both go hand and hand. I've dealt with it for 20 years. My Doctor has put me on Cymbalta and I love it. It helps with both. Before I started taking medication for it I would take a benedryl and it would ease the anxiety. I would sit down and put cold water on my face and breath slowly. That helps to slow down your heart rate. It helped me a lot.
My Doctor has prescribed Klonopin for bad anxiety attacks and it will stop them in less than five minutes. You do have to figure out ways to bring yourself back to normal. Try doing different things and see what works for you. Good luck and e-mail me if you'd like to talk in more detail.

medications for anxiety are called anxiolytics, and there are numerous kinds. There are also behavioral classes available that help you learn to cope with the physical symptoms and skills to help head off an attack. Your best bet is to see a psychiatrist as they are most familiar with the medications available and what may work best in your circumstance, and they would have access to information about the classes available to you in your area.
