Ships Present at Pearl Harbor, 0800 7 December 1941
Related Resource: Pearl Harbor Attack
The commissioned U.S. Navy ships in the list below are sorted by type and hull number, for example New Orleans (CA-32) is found in hull number order under heavy cruisers. For the purposes of this list, yard craft assigned to the Fourteenth Naval District and other small non-commissioned craft are not included. In addition, Pearl Harbor is defined as the area inside the nets guarding the harbor entrance.
Ships marked with an asterisk (*) were within twelve miles of the island of Oahu but were not actually within Pearl Harbor as defined above. Locations of these ships are indicated. Ships marked with a number symbol (#) were sunk or destroyed during the Pearl Harbor attack. All of these were later raised and rebuilt except for Arizona, Oklahoma, and Utah. Oklahoma was raised but not rebuilt.
The U.S. carriers were not at Pearl Harbor. On 28 November, Admiral Kimmel sent USS Enterprise under Rear Admiral Willliam Halsey to deliver Marine Corps fighter planes to Wake Island. On 4 December Enterprise delivered the aircraft and on December 7 the task force was on its way back to Pearl Harbor. On 5 December, Admiral Kimmel sent the USS Lexington with a task force under Rear Admiral Newton to deliver 25 scout bombers to Midway Island. The last Pacific carrier, USS Saratoga, had left Pearl Harbor for upkeep and repairs on the West Coast.

the only commissioned ships "permanently" destroyed..as in not raised repaired and put back into action....were Arizona, a memorial today in Pearl Harbor, and Oklahoma.......raised but sank under tow to the West Coast as a hulk.......Utah was a target/training ship at the time of the attack; her hulk was broken up in place where she sank after the war....
all the other ships sunk or damaged were raised and repaired.......Nevada bombarded Utah Beach during the Normandy invasion; .West Virginia, California and Tennessee helped sink Yamashrio and Fuso during the liberation of the Philippines...

USS Arizona was a total loss, Oklahoma capsized, Utah, an old battleship used for gunnery training also capsized. California and West Virgina were both sunk in the shallow water, Nevada beached her self, Tennessee, Maryland and Pennsylvania were lightly damaged. Light Cruisers Helena and Raleigh were both torpedoed but did not capsize, destroyers Shaw, Cassin and Downs were all severely damaged and sunk in the dry-docks they were in. USS Oglala, flag ship of the Minesweeper fleet capsized, USS Curtiss a seaplane tender suffered bomb damage. many other ships received miner damage. also nearly all the airfields were attacked and hundreds of planes were destroyed, the army Chow hall bombed, about 2,400 people died, more than half of those who died were on the Arizona and Oklahoma
USS Oklahoma was salvageable but the navy did not prioritize its repair because repairing old battleships was not as important as building new carriers and battleships. Utah was raised and sunk in a quite corner of the Harbor she is still there today.
Oklahoma was sold for scrap but sank on the way back to the main land.
All battleships other than the Arizona and Oklahoma were repaired and back in service by the end of 1943. After the war they were cut up for scrap-metal except for Nevada and Pennsylvania that were sunk as targets and are on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, along with Oklahoma and Arizona they still exist but the wreck sites are unknown.
Arizona still sits on the Harbor bottom were she was blown up at her moorings on Dec. 7th 1941.
