My mom had gingivitis/gum disease. Does that mean I'm going to get it too? She always told me it is hereditary, but I've just been reading up on it, and it seems it happens when you don't brush your teeth well or floss. She had to get major surgery on her gum when she was in her late 30's. Am I going to get it too? What can I do to prevent that?
Thank you so much!

YVONNE,
YOUR MOTHER IS WRONG.
WHY?
SHE IS NOT A DENTIST AND DOESN'T KNOW WHAT LEADS UP TO GETTING GINGIVITIS. THE CONDITION CAN ONLY BE PASSED ON DOWN IF EACH GENERATION DOES NOT CARE FOR THEIR GUMS. SO, THEN EACH GENERATION TEACHES THE FOLLOWING ONE HOW NOT TO CARE FOR THEIR GUMS.
SO, YOU WON'T GET IT LIKE SHE DID IF YOU CARE FOR YOUR GUMS AND REGULARLY SEE A DENTIST.

Gingivitis isnt heraditary, but there are other gum diseases that are and you may possibly get. brush your teeth floss and use a rinse like crest pro health daily!

Hello. It can be hereditary but it doesn't mean for sure that you will get it. You need to keep a strict oral hygiene routine that includes brushing, flossing and mouthwash. This will greatly reduce your risks of developing it. Good luck.

No, you won't get it. Keep flossing and brushing. Keep up with reg dental checkups. You'll get it from improper hygene. See reg dental appointments for cleanings are really important. The dentist has tools to reach places floss and brushes cannot. So keep it up! =)
