Download schedule A and its instructions. That will show you what can be taken as itemized deductions.

If you own a business, the short answer is that you can generally write off expenses that are reasonable and are required to make money in your business.

The better question is; Do you own or rent? And if you do not own, then are you self-employed or do you work for wages. If you do not own a home and/or are not self-employed, as far as tax write-offs, do not even bother (unless you donate ten-percent of your income). If you do own a home and/or are self-employed, then pretty much-the sky is the limit (with receipts of course), however, be warned of the ugly alternative minimum tax; if you fall in a high enough income bracket. Also, the higher the income the fewer the amounts that are allowed to be deducted as tax write-offs (unless you are a corporation, of course).

There are so many things that I would hate to even try to answer it here. Better question from you would be what are you looking to write off and see if it is legal.
