...then why did 12 nobodies go and spread the biggest lie ever? What did they get out of it? They never got fame or greatness in the normal sense. Close to all of them were tortured bruttally by the Romans. And then why did the thousands upon thousands submit to the brutal tortures prepared for them? Why didn't they all just say, "Sorry, my mistake, guess I was wrong. "Under the emperor Decius many persecutions arose against the name of Christ, and there was such a slaughter of believers that they could not be numbered." Can you give me a real possible answer that is serious. (They weren't all "crazy", that isn't even trying. This isn't made up, because Roman documents and different things not written by Christians confirm this. Hey, just look at the Colleseum.)

You're absolutely right and the Catholic Catechism makes the same arguments and even carries them even further by saying that it some people believe that the apostles stole the body of Christ so they could say that he has risen but that wouldn't have been possible because there were several companies of soldiers guarding his tomb. Some people also say that the apostles remembered Jesus so well and carried him with them that they actually believed that he was risen. But that wouldn't make sense because if you recall how Tomas didn't believe Jesus was there until he actually felt the wounds of Jesus.

Look at all of the followers of Islam.... yet Christians have no problem in saying it's an outright lie. Of course, everyone feels that what they have is The Truth... or at least truthful (I haven't run across many Pagans who would say they have THE Truth.). Muslims are slaughtered for their belief... and die for it in much the same way some Christians did during the 1st Century - self-sacrifice in the name of their religion. Just because someone dies for their beliefs doesn't automatically mean everything they ever believed about it was true... nor does it mean that what is written about is true either. Things like this get embellished all the time.
What Roman documents? I've had plenty of people tell me about this and I can provide Roman Documents which show people who followed Dionysus was done the exact same way. Rome killed ANYONE they felt did not conform to their way. They did not target just Christians.
What about the Coliseum? You should do more studies, that whole "thrown to the lions" thing was done in outlying towns. And it wasn't just Christians who got thrown to the lions. It was anyone the Gov't didn't like. They have NO evidence of it happening in the Coliseum itself. That's Hollywood that provided that image....

All religions do begin as sects. Just like the modern day sects you see on television. According to mainstream Roman society they were crazy and a threat to Roman order.
Christianity and Catholicism exist in part because of a dream the Emperor Constantine had in which he was told to wear the symbol of the cross on the soldiers of his army in order to win a battle. He did happen to win and so he converted himself and Rome with him.

any speculation about ancient peoples' motives is juat that - speculation.
maybe they were deluded, stoned, trying to achieve political power, victims of the same con... or maybe they were right, partially or completely.
I don't know. Neither do you.
I tend to suspect that they intended well, but like all humans edited things to condform to what they wished and interpreted. We have no way of knowing what their leader's actual views and teachings were, since these people (whether 12 or more) had the ability and possibly the motivation to edit and change as they saw fit.

Sigh...men are insecure and like power, simple as that. Look at the world now, loads of them about. People could have said ANYTHING in them days and been believed. People would have believed crap like virgin births or people can walk on water or part the seas! laughable now isn't it...

You could ask the same of David Koresh and the Branch Davidians. They gained infamy through violent, untimely deaths--just as Jesus and his followers did.
A cult is a cult, no matter what label you attach to it. If the leader is persuasive and charismatic enough, people will believe anything.

In the beginning God... as if an eternal God has a beginning or an end... NOT! It's all "allegory" and "mystery" to solve in time, lest all perish by law instead of none perish by grace.
The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.

And why did they tell them to go to Jerusalem and look up the living that knew Jesus and saw him die and saw him walk the Earth again after death.
