Hi,

I had a small corner of my molar tooth break 6 days ago. Not much pain but was very worried about it. Went to my usual NHS dentist 3 days later and he said it should be a simple repair by filling.

However, since the pain has stayed and at times is worse than others. I'm taking 2 paracetemol 4 times a day which makes things bearable for a few days I imagine.

He took the filling out and has packed it instead. Says there is no reason why it should still hurt. Would have liked an X-ray however :-(

He said give it up to a week and see if the pain subsides.

Could it be a nerve problem in the area? Will this die in time?

How long should I give it tbefore going to the expense of a root canal?

There appears to be no infection, but should I get a course of anti-biotics just in case?

I really don't want to lose this tooth as I have lost my other main molar on the bottom left side and don't want to have problems chewing.

Thanks,

Lee.

I've got a cracking local GP. He has given me a course of anti-biotics. It seems to be improving slightly already.

Time will tell.

I'll keep you updated.

Thanks,

Lee.

BTW: Thanks Chris and Jaw. Best answers so far.

Yes he did put in a sedative dressing. I'll take the weeks course of anti-biotics and hopefully save the tooth. At the moment its a mild gnawing. I'm no dentist but I think there must be a small part of the nerve thats been severed on the repair. Hopefully, that part of nerve will die and the pain will subside. Fingers crossed! :-)

I don't want to lose it over something small. Dentist seems to think its no big deal. Yeah right. Shame the VERY SMALL minority of dentists have no sympathy and are only concerned with money. On the NHS we don't have much choice about who we get.

I wish I was rich LOL :-)

I am so fed up with dentists and their arrogance and haughty attitude and price gouging. One day it will be different. I have fillings that have fallen out, and I am chewing daily on the pin posts that used to retain the amalgam! That is how adamant I am about not financing their greed any further. Greed is one of the deadly sins, too. I would not want dentists' karma.

If you have to get into the expense, be budgeted. The root canal can performed by somone professionl may be for a lot of years . More importantly you may have an exposed area open for infection and decay including mouth ordor. Can bonding in this area be an alternative? Ask if it is cheaper but you may have trouble with hot and cold sensation afterwards....You need an X-ray to see the damage of the area. That packing worries me. Call the local hospital and ask if there is a dental clinic. PS The CROWN for the root canal should be in your questions when you contact your doctor.

i think you should go back to your dentist as there might be a high spot on the tooth where he fillled it to much when you bite together it will be catching a nerve so your dentist will grind it down for you a little.if this dosent work demand an xray to see if there is any infection and if there is your dentist can give you a course of antibiotics

Whenever you have an issue with a tooth, even if it appears to be "a small corner," your dentist should always take a PA (periapical x-ray) to ensure that there is no further involvement than that particular area. He dropped the ball on that one!

Have just had a similar problem.

A course of anti biotics sorted it out, and whilst a little sore after the weeks course it's considerably better.

Get the anti biotics from him, take the full course and wait.

Why don't you go back to the Dentist and complain?
Now isn't THAT a good idea?
Don't know how I do it........
