Well in most cases it's safe, I have one and I had swelling for a month. If your going to get this done make sure it's by a professional piercing staff. Just don't walk in to the mom and pop place, do some research and find out different rates. In some cases people have gotten an infection or more swelling than usual but I've never heard of what you are talking about. Maybe someone told you that to scare you out of piercing your tongue. I'll tell you once you've had it done the swelling goes down, you just have to take care of it and not eat too many hard foods, and you can't drink beer for about a month. Also listen to the piercer, they will tell you what to do and what not to do with the care of your new tongue ring.
Don't sweat it too much, I know plenty of people who have it done and none of them had swelling that bad.

I've heard only one person die from that person persing his tongue. But that was when he gave him self a snake tongue (when someone spilts his tougue right down the middle as long as an inch). It can swell, it can get infected, and it WILL hurt. I guess that you could die but look at the chances. Look at all the people who have toungue rings. At least in my area, people have alot! Hey, what can I say do what you want. I can only tell you what I think. Oh yeh! I almost forgot to type, I also have a tounge ring. For a rating of 1-10 for pain. I would give it an 8.

Yes, you can, but it is rare and highly inlikely. The slight, temporary swelling can be normal. You really don't have to worry if you know that the person who will be piercing your tongue is using a sterilized needle/mandrel. The only thing that you have to worry about is getting an infection, which can be easy since the mouth is the nastiest part of the human body since it is a host to hundreds of different bacteria. Just watch what you eat for the next couple of days and then an infection will be almost impossible to get.

Actually, you can. If it becomes too swelled and blocks the airway it is a possibility although not very common. You can also bleed to death if you happen to hit one of those blue arteries too if you don't get medical attention in time.
I've had mine done for 10 years now but had I read this stuff or realized the risks I probably wouldn't have done it. However, mine's been in long enough and goes undetected unless I tell someone.
