They can definitely add to why people have low self-esteem. But when the child is old enough, he/she is now able to realize that self-esteem is actually created by themselves. Each person chooses how to take what is thrown at them. It's really difficult to do that, since it's been set in his/her mind for so long, so they might be help doing it. It's definitely self-made.

Parents protective stance is brought about by the following;
1. Bad life experiences which they don't want to happen to their children.
2. Environment assesment. Places that we usually go to nowadays are not safe compared to many years back.
3. On how parents perceive their children if they can really protect themselves.
4. Parents do trust their children, its the environment they don't trust.
5. And the most important thing, parents love their children. It is not enough that parents provide food, clothing and shelter. The most important thing is to be there for their children to protect them whenever necessary until they can stand on their own.
For children, learn to take responsibility in small things so that you can earn the trust and confidence of your parents.
As parents, we love our children more than our own selves. You are the reason of our existense. Learn to communicate to your parents and learn from them.

No, self esteem is lowered by a parent's verbal/emotional abuse, overprotection is simply that.
