There is a good article on kids and tandems here. It covers kidbacks(kids cranks for tandems) and tag a longs (there are many manufacturers of these)

There is a newish towing bar that will join a full childs bike to what you are riding. Most don't know about them yet.

Somewhere in the next 2-4 years your six year old will not want to be seen, being towed behind. They might be o.k. on a tandem though. (kids are like that) By that stage they might fit on a tandem without the kiddy cranks. So factor that into your purchase.

A company called Adam's makes a product called the Trail-a-Bike. It turns any bike into a tandem that a kid can ride.

Yes. Sorry I don't know specifics, but I have seen couples on tandems with kids on trailers.

Before buying new, check out craigslist.org for other people in the area who are selling their used bikes.
This purchase is only good for 1 or 2 years before the kid outgrows it so there are a lot of people selling them. A used sporting goods store might also be a good place to look.

there are half bikes that attach to the seatpost of another bike. you could attach it to your bike and your child would sit on the attachment. its hooked up to a drivetrain also, so he can help on those tougher climbs. theres one at my shop and i think its around $150
