My guesses: 1. It gives them a sense of belonging. The crowds are usually very large in the audiences of the shows. 2. The speakers are often charismatic speakers with good intonation and phrasing that appeals to the ear and sense of "control". This is almost exclusively a male thing---not many popular female "telepharisees". Control and punishment (dominant male father instead of nurturant loving mother) are two elements that figure highly in evangelical themes 3. A lot of shut-in people who can't get out to church watch those shows.

People have a natural need to worship. The proper manner of worship acceptable to God. has been camouflaged by all the false religions shouting so loudly.
Also, we have a fast food mentality. Telepharisees put on the flash, a pinch of Bible, a bucket of sanctimony and a truck load of begging. You don't have to do anything. Just turn on the TV and send in the cash. Credit cards accepted.

Like someone else said, mostly its the poor shut ins. My grandmother had a friend with parkinson's disease, so couldn't go to church. She started watching one of these con men, and he had her convinced if she didn't send him everything she could, she wouldn't get to heaven. Now, this woman was elderly, sick and scared, so she bought it hook, line and sinker. She was eating cat food because everything she could spare from her social security check went to that con man. It really should be illegal for them to beg for money like that. If they want to preach, fine, but what they do to these people is unethical. Makes me ill. I'm christian, always have been, but no way would I spend 1 minute watching any of these chalatans. Cannot understand how anyone can't see thru them. People living in mansions and flying around in their private jets and begging for money from old people on social security is a pretty sure tip off that there's something wrong with the picture.

NEVER seen one in England,it would not happen on any mainstream channel. I imagine there is an obscure `god slot` somewhere, but the need for such nonsense is much reduced in UK, where religion takes a back seat.

I think their audience is elderly shut ins who feel a connection to something on television. Maybe they don't have anyone to talk to and sending in money and hearing their name on TV means a lot to them. It's a sham, but they are peddling to a vulnerable audience.
