Do you think he wanted to carry them around for all those year? They were heavy... I really don't have a certain answer, but it could be because he buried them while he was still alive and being chased by his enemies. It seems that at one point he would have to bury them or else he would have died and they would have been left sitting there for anyone to take. If you want to know the truth, why don't you read the Book of Mormon and pray about it? If you get an answer it is true, and the rest can be figured out later. If you don't get an answer (which won't happen), you cans simply move on with your life without having to come up with ways to disprove the LDS religion and the events that did occur as God restored his gospel to the earth.

The answer to your question lies in the principle of the ressurection. In all likelihood, Moroni was hunted down and killed like a dog by the savages who inhabited the land. At that point his spirit was separated from his body. His spirit went up to heaven to, shortly thereafter, be ressurected leaving behind the mortal body and the gold plates.
This is all granted that through the power of our Heavenly Father, they could have been taken up into heaven, but in His wisdom they were not. They were left on the earth until the time was fufilled that their work would be finished, and they were taken up into heaven.
I hope this answers your question.

Who says Moroni has the plates now? Perhaps he buried them in another hill somewhere, to be found some day by another of God's prophets.

And where are we told Moroni took them to heaven or wherever??? We don't know where they are, we don't claim to know either. Personally, it matters not to me where they are. I know the Book of Mormon is true and that's all that matters. Thanks for your concern though.

Also interesting is how Moses broke his tablets. What is wrong with these prophets are they insane? I mean if god gave you something would you break it or bury it? Think about it… god gives you a tablet, you are utterly shocked , and you think to yourself “Duh, I got tablets from god… duh, think I’ll go break ‘em…” or, “Duh, god sent me these here tablets… duh, best thing to do is dig a hole and put them in there…"
