A friend of mine just bought a 3 month old chihuahua and it loves her so much, but the little thing just hates her husband. It keeps growling and nipping at him. Is there a reason for this?

Dogs are predisposed to prefer women due to our higher pitched voices. In pictures of sound waves, the picture of the sound of dogs voices in play is the same as women's voices.
(this a gross generalization, but good information.)
Men's voices tend to fall into the range dogs associate with danger.
Also, men tend to hover over dogs, which is scary for any dog, but moreso for a small dog.
Small dogs aren't genetically predisposed to be mean any more than any other dog, don't believe that silly nonsense.
part of the problem is the female probably picks up the Chi when it starts getting stressed instead of allowing the Chi to be a normal dog with "four on the Floor" to get used to things and learn to not be afraid.
What the dog is doing is a combination of fear aggression behavior and resource guarding. The best thing to do it take the puppy to a properly run Positive Reinforcement based Puppy Kindergarten. Both the husband and the wife should go.
In the meantime, teach the dog that the good things in life come from the husband. Have the husband feed the dog by hand. The husband holds the bowl and feeds the dog a bit at a time, giving the dog a chance to learn:
1) the husband is also a 'boss'
2) good things happen when the husband is around.

Chihuahuas are just like that. They're cute but kind of a nuisance to strangers because they're nippy. Consider this a challenge. Try to make friends with the little fellow and see if you can win him over. I do believe, if you are successful, you will then be eligible for some kind of award from the president of Mexico.

some dogs are just predisposed to not like men. My chihuahua is very weary of men and HATES kids. He warmed up to me immediately but took forever with my dad and boyfriend. Your friend's husband should go above and beyond to play with the dog and be the one who takes her on walks. good luck to your friend!

They will have to train the dog to not do that.
I saw something on the Oprah show just last night about training a dog with love......... let me look it up here........

Yes there is a reason: Chihuahua's are one person dogs and they prefer women/girls to males. My mother use to breed them and out of all the pup's only one female liked men.

it is just in its blood. there is just something about him that the dog just does not like...it may get used to him eventually...
