it means your are getting an audit, something on your return either does not agree with what you filed with the Feds or there is something else they have noticed as 'unusual'.

Dear Freckled: Basically you are being audited. The children are the issue probably. The IRS will want to know where the children live and who takes care of them. School records prove they live with you if the address on the school records is yours. Medical records are another way to show they live with you and you pay their bills. The IRS will also look at the children's father and did he try to claim them. Did you qualify for EITC, as this could also trigger a review. The stimulus money is pretty much under control and refunds are being processed with normal turn around time. Does your fiance have income, another possible issue. As soon as you get the letter, respond quickly. Good luck. For some reason they have decided to look at your return more closely. (Also known as a desk audit). This may have been at random, or something may have thrown up a red flag. As long as you are comfortable with what you filed, I wouldn't worry. Just be patient and respond promptly to any requests for information the IRS sends you.

They are looking over your return to find any discrepancies with your numbers. If they should find any questionable figures
they will send you a letter in the mail.

Just what it means. They are matching up the numbers reported with what they received for W-2's and 1099's and so on. If everything matches then you will get a check in the mail.

That's probably not good. You should review your return thoroughly and - if there is anything that you are not sure about go to a CPA that specializes in taxes ASAP.

They are probably looking into it- maybe they seem to find some discrepancies and want to audit you. If you were honest about what you wrote, you have nothing to worry about.

It just means it's sitting on someone's desk waiting to be processed. Don't worry unless you lied.

The IRS has received it and will be mailing your refund shortly. If your return is small and you just filed this is probably the case.
