USUALLY people like a certain amount of physical affection. It's usually given freely as a infant or toddler. As a child gets older the parent may push the child away by saying s/he's busy, the child is too clingy/needy, or they need to be more self-reliant. If the affection isn't constantly reinforced in some way, then the child learns to do without.

Do you notice if your sister was into dolls or stuffed animals and maybe carried one around all the time until she felt she was too big for that "baby stuff"? Maybe it was a blankie.

For whatever reasons that we may never understand, some kids don't think they deserve to be hugged. It may be an adult figure in their life (don't exclude teachers or coaches) is always saying they're bad or not as good as another kid.

Is there sibling rivalry where she compares herself--probably unfavorably--to you or other brothers and sisters?

Then, there are just some kids who are like this. My sister is one of them. No matter how old she is, it's never changed. She was sickly as a child so she got more than her share of attention from everyone. She doesn't talk about herself so we don't know what made her decide one day to treat us like outsiders. She shows affection to her daughter, but even that is limited.

Have you tried talking to her about this? You could start off with something like I love when I have the chance to give you a hug. you make me feel better. She may not buy it, but it's worth a try.

I think some people just aren't "touchy-feely" I know alot of people who just don't like being touched. I'm a hugger, so I'm all over it, but sometimes when I'm in a bad mood, I just don't want to be touched either. Some people just would prefer to keep it to a handshake and a smile.

Sometimes it can be other reasons (someone's hurt them, upset, stress) but you could always ask them and see why they aren't cool with the touching.

as children they were not held or touch as much as some others were, so when they get affection in such a manner they dont know how to respond to it, so they oftenly push it away
