1st: It's a commandment. Read Malachi 3:8-10 ...Will a man rob God?...
2nd: It's an opportunity to show faith and give willingly.
3rd: Blessings and lots of them. I can testify to the amazing blessings that come when we willingly and cheerfully give.
4th: It helps do things like, build the temples, build our meeting houses, support missionaries, provide materials like, hymnals, scriptures, and lesson books, youth activities, ward and stake activities and much goes to charity.
We don't have paid clergy so it doesn't go to greedy men or women.
This is all done in private. Members do it of their own free agency and they don't do it to brag or gloat.
Have a great day! :)

Wow Enfin! What a way to misuse scriptures. The correct answers have already been given. It is a commandment to tithe. Nothing we own is ours!! NOTHING!! God blesses us with everything we have. In return He asks us to give Him 10% back. I humbly tithe and am happy with what the money is used for: building up the Kingdom of God here on earth. Geez, you guys that answer every mormon question with cult accusations should really try harder to receive an education on the LDS church.
I think you ask a good question trratut, and I hope you read the honest answers on here that have scriptural references as to why tithing is necessary. All Christian Churches should pay tithing.
The problem is, people read the scriptures about the part where we are all saved by accepting Christ, and then close the book and ignore all the MANY other verses that instruct us how to follow Christ's teachings properly.

Well our church is NOT a buissness and shame on whoever said that. Also, it's not that much of our income that goes in. We pay 10% which may sound like a lot to some, but really it isn't. That money actually goes toward humanitarian aid around the world. It's not just for our church. And how else would the LDS church earn money for new buildings and such?

We pay 10% of our income.
WHY?
When I was pregnant and my husband and I due to circumstances had no jobs, no place to live, and about $50, through these tithings the church helped us find a place to live, pay for it, and give us food. Because of their help we are now on our feet finacnially secure and have a healthy daughter. There are many LDS and non-LDs families that recieve help with the money we pay, they also receive food from the Bishops storehouse (where I have volunteered MANY hours) Also we go to church, someone needs to pay for the lights! The water! To build them, ect! Also to pay for temples! We do not pay our Bishops or any other church leader, they have their own careers or are retired, ect.
That is why!

It is not a matter of spending 10% on the church. It is not a matter of the church needing lots of money. The whole point of tithing is to teach us the principle of sacrifice and humility, to cause us to exercise our faith and learn to rely upon the mercies of heaven to sustain and support us. Yes, the money is put to good use. The tithing builds our buildings, supports our missionary work and our geneaology work. The tithing supports the welfare program and our communications programs as well as our large educational system. There are other funds as well but most of it comes from tithing.
I can testify to you that there has been many times when my wife and I could not make ends meet, yet we paid our tithing and still managed to get by. Our basic needs have always been met, sometimes with the help of family and sometimes with the help of the church, but we have managed. Now that we are self-sustaining, we give back to the system by giving generously so that othes can be helped as well.
Tithing is a principle sent from God and we cannot learn to exercise our faith unless we are tried and tested. Tithing is one of those small tests that helps us to become more like God.

See Malachi Chapter 3. We are commanded to pay tithing. It is also a functional thing. Although LDS bishops, stake presidents and local leaders are not paid. There are still the operational costs. Plus, we give a lot of money to humanitarian relief, the church welfare system, and the perpetual eduction fund.

Your primary question is misleading by using the word 'what.'
Anyway, Martha and Rac's answers are on target; we pay our tithes as commanded by the Lord--only 10% of our income.
Since when did the Lord command us to pay tithes and offerings? If you ponder the biblical scriptures you will see the answer to that. Also, modern revelation as seen in the Doctrine and Covenants has emphasized the commandment to pay tithing and fast offerings.
Tithing goes to the maintenance and repairs of our buildings and contributes to the building of temples. The fast offerings go to the humanitarian aid, both local and around the world.

We aren't "required" to do anything, however the bible is littered with scriptures about paying tithing (10% of your income). It's totally personal and if you don't do it, that's between you and God. The only time they ask you about it is when you get your interview for a Temple recommend.

It helps run the buildings and goes to chairtable donations. We have helped in many unfortunate situations that have happened and when we take supplies to those it all come out of the 10% tithing we pay.
