Is it right for someone to continue to have children, but not have the financial means with which to support it?

Why is it mine and every other taxpayers responsibility to pay for someone elses poor judgement?

Same with people who default on loans, credit card debt, etc...

Why must I pay more in fees, interest, etc...because others make poor choices?

I am responsible...it is not my problem that other's are not...am I my Brother's keeper?

NO they should not. . That is one thing they should not do. If you can't take care of yourself surely you should know you cannot take care of a child.

Its not always because of poor judgement. Poverty is not the fault of the poor... Some people face worst circumstances than you. Be happy that you are not in their place. What if you were born in their place without the opportunities you have had....wouldn't you hate it if the rich people thought like this? Some times people are lazy and don't even try to build a life for themselves but this is not always the case. Some people just dont have the choice.

I think that the poor are an underused resource. It is quite possible, with today's technology, to convert the poor to usable fuel to warm the houses of the wealthy, and I think we should get a team of crack scientists working on that right away. We could herd all the poor into small, contained areas of cities and allow them to breed. We could then take their children when they have reached an efficient size for fuel.

Think of the possibilities. More real estate would be freed up by concentrating the poor into smaller areas. We could feed them the sort of food we really interesting and important people would never choose to eat. Since we weren't going to depend upon the poor to do any actual work, we could save scads of money by not educating their children. And any chemical traces left over after their use as fuel could be converted to fertilizer or used to pave the driveways of the estates of the wealthy.

Let's get moving on this right away! I know it's just a modest proposal for our times, but one, perhaps whose time has come.

Just in response to the first question, the right to have children is part of the implicit right to "life & liberty," in the sense that it is a free choice one should be able to make on one's own, unless the state has some sort of compelling reason to prevent it (specifically, the medical issues associated with children between relatives that are too close). It may be a bad decision, perhaps even a morally suspect one, for someone without means to continue to reproduce (assuming they have a choice in the matter). But that doesn't give the government a compelling interest to prevent them from having children. This is what we call an inalienable right, in that it is impossible for the government to provide any argument in defense of abridging this right, as it is fundamental to our status as human beings.

I wouldn't want my government to regulate breeding. Let the people regulate themselves. But I also don't want to support these people either. They can support themselves and if they deprive their children of the necessities of life then the government has the right to place those children in a home where they will be properly taken care of.

We already have income redistribution. Last year I paid 5K in taxes. One of my co-workers who earns about the same gets a "refund" of 7K because she chose to have children. She gets back more than she pays in so in effect, the government is subsidizing her with my tax money. And I have another co-worker who no longer even has federal taxes taken out of his check and he STILL gets over 2K in a "refund". He figured that since he always gets his money back anyway, why bother even to pay it in the first place.

There is a grassroots movement in the country which is advocating the "FairTax". This would make things equal and eliminate all of this socialistic crap that we've gotten ourselves into. Check it out----

I agree with you. I have worked in a housing developement where the women would have kids just to get more money from the govt. I have seen women quit their jobs because they had to pay 10.00 fir rent. In this area they think they should get everything for free. They are lazy and laugh about it. They know how to work the system and they tell each other how. Now if people are just having a hard time that's different I think they should be counseled first. And they give away free protection at the Health Department. People should not be selfish and use their kids to get money because they grow up to use the system as well just like they were taught by dear ole mom.

hmmmm why single out poor people? a law requiring a certain level of income isn't the only factor in raising children. a law that every potential parent must undergo IQ and psychological testing in order to get a license to have a child should also be instituted. right?

oh. 1 more thing. if you're only allowed to have children if you can maintain a certain income are the children to be taken away from you if you lose your job?

Welcome to Reality 101. People are going to make poor choices and those choices are going to impact the lives of others. And sometimes that involves taking on responsibilities that aren't technically ours to shoulder.

Or would you prefer to let the children of these parents starve or be homeless? That's punishing the innocent for their mothers' and fathers' bad decisions. Those kids didn't ask to be born, but now that they're here, we have a human and humane responsibility to provide for them until they can care for themselves.

No, it's not fair to the taxpayers. But sometimes we have to serve a greater good and give up a few of our own rights to care for those who can't care for themselves.

Maybe you should pay to make birth control cheaper, so they actually can have a choice in whether or not to have children. Do you really think that they want to spend money feeding children that they could be using to go to school, or buy a house? What kind of idiot are you?

Oh, that's right. The kind with money.

"allowed"? This isn't China my friend, we have a right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Instead of complaining, why not ask what we can do to stop people from continually having children without making more laws? Ask that and my answer is education, education, education.
