depression interferes with a person's ability to lead a normal life. there is also evidence that indicates depression has a role in causing other diseases, like heart disease. lastly, more and more people are being diagnosed as clinically depressed, so the problem has become a huge one.

it isn't, it is just a media sensation. People use it to blame their general inadequacies on because they are too lazy to give a damn. I was "clinically depressed" from the time that I was 8-17, so I was pumped full of drugs that really destroyed almost all of my biological systems all because I never acted my age. All that I ever did was read books, and from the fourth grade on I have had perfect score on every aptitude test, I can debate almost any topic form either side, I have had a girlfriend for the past 5 years without a problem, and I could have as many friends as I want, but my parents felt that there was something wrong with me for raising myself. So, they did their best to make me revert to a 12 year old, or thirteen year old, or whatever year old I was at the time, just because I have held a mental age of 33 for the past decade. But now that I am off of the anti-depressants I am actually happy for once because I can feel some semblance of emotion, I am able to sleep, I am very popular in all of my advanced classes, I have never cut or done drugs, and I was accepted to 6 colleges for next fall. Really, don't ever believe that something is a "huge problem" just because you heard or read about it, because the only news that you can trust is what you witness yourself. I feel that the entire "depression epidemic" is a load of bullshit that aims to instill conformity into a broken system that denies any attempt at advancement out of the poor excuse of a majority rule interpreted as a rule that majority is the only option for life, and those who go against it are to be cut down for questioning the insecurities of others.

No one seems to be totally healthy anymore. If EVERYONE would eat their spinach like grandma said to, we all would be better off. Your brain cannot work on junk food and drugs. Give it what it runs on and you'll get better results. Also ours is such a materialistic society, that many become depressed trying to keep up with the Jones. Both can ruin lives.Everyone needs something to get out of bed in the morning for. Choosing happiness really is possible!!

by this do you mean the condition its self or why does it seem bigger now.

People and organizations and all are trying to educate the public about this and to take away the "bad things" people think about and all. People who are depressed can get treatment and get better and they can function in society.

as for the more medical parts i think that has already been answered well enough by the above responses

depression is from the way the brain is developed and can happen to anyone who is shunned from life by friends and family.
