I have a 98 Toyota Avalon XLS with about 97,000 miles on it and I am only getting about 11 MPG with premium and I don't drive much faster than average. This car is supposed to be getting more than twice that. I just got new tires and that only helped a little. I also just got an oil change and I always have routine maintanence done. Why is my gas mileage so bad?

If your car doesn't feel like it's running worse (ie shaking, or stuttering) then odds are it's running way too rich and wasting fuel. This is usually quickly caught because your check engine light should have turned on.

Things I would check first:
1. Make sure your air filter is clean.
2. Check your O2 sensors. They must be giving a faulty reading to the computer to make it run that poorly.

Toyota Avalon Gas Mileage

Here are a few suggesstions from an owner of two high mileage Toyotas.
First lets assume a few things
1. An air filter will not cause what is happening with your vehicle, unless it is completely clogged
2. Lets look at the rpm's on the tach while you are driving. On an Avalon with a 3 liter v6 you should be running around 2500 rpm's or less at 60mph. Are you getting this? If not you are experiencing a transmission problem.
3 Check your brakes, especially the front brakes. Take the wheel off and check to see if the rotor will turn freely. This happened to my Supra once when a brake caliper stuck and was causing the rotor to rub against the pad.

Hope this helps

check your airfilter, and a tune up on the engine is probably needed change the plugs /wires etc.., change the o2 oxygen sensors, the oxy sensor will make a engine run very very poor and cut your gas mileage in half. 97,000 miles and you said you have always had the routine maintance done it shouldnt be giving you any major probs but the oxy sensors do need to be changed periodically and plugs etc.. only last so long, do you change your oil regualar and also clean/chnage airfilter least every other oil change, I recomend oil changes every 3,000 miles but Toyota states you can go up to 5,000 miles between changes, in your owners manual it shows a section on routine scheduled maintance to be followed at certain mileage, have a look over this see how you have complied with that , I would think a good tune up including plugs, wires, oxy. sensors, airfilter, fuel filter, etc.. would make the difference. is it smoking any? a black smoke would mean it6 is running rich/flooding, recomend a certified toyota tech. at any delaer ship doing the work , they know the system, Toyota builds very good cars and trucks, good luck, I get better gas mialge out of my tundra with the v8 so get it checked out.. Good Luck..
