We will probably see a woman president, black president, jewish president, gay president, and a combination of those before we see an atheist president.

I don't believe we in the US will ever have an Atheist. See, the Presidents get their votes mainly from the American South, which includes the Bible Belt. The people there are some of the most religious people you will find anywhere and they will only trust a religious, namely Christian President, although we might unknowingly elect an Atheist who claims he is religious just to get votes. That is a very possible thing that could happen.

The first six Presidents were primarily Deist or technically Christian with Deist philosophy(4), with 2 Unitarians. None of them were traditional Christians. Jefferson and Madison can hardly be referred to as Christians.

Abraham Lincoln never professed a belief in Christianity, aside from statements addressed to Christian groups, and may have been an Atheist. He was likely a Deist and never a Christian.

There are others along those lines.

Only since the Cold War has America been plagued with a wave of Fundamental Christianity and several Born again Christians in office.

It was almost unheard of before 1900.

Prime Minister? Depends on the country. Places that are majority atheist like Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Japan, etc. doubtless have a number of atheist leaders.

America's a bit different. The founding fathers are occasionally confused as being atheists, but they were in fact deists (not christian however). According to his aides and closest friends, Abraham Lincoln was an agnostic verging on atheist. He would take the word "god" out of speeches made for him and replace it with the word "maker" which he felt could mean the natural order of the universe. He also hung around a lot of "freethinkers" and he even wrote a book which apparently was an eloquent attack on the bible, using bible verses to disprove itself - but that was destroyed by a friend to save his political career.

Apparently President Taft was an atheist... I know he wasn't christian, but I don't know much about that.

Not of the US or Great Britain.

Albania in 1967 declared itself the world's first atheist state. Leaders of communist countries were commonly avowed atheists. (Curiously, where feigning more faith than you have is ordinary in the US, feigning less than you have was de rigeur in the Eastern Bloc.)

Sweden, France, maybe even Great Britain could end up with an out atheist for a leader.

EDIT: right, forgot about Finland.

It will not be for a while, in communist countries there have been atheist rulers and some scandinavian country I would venture to say Finland there was an atheist president. Also to the poster ahead of me, Catholics are a sect of Christianity

The US will never have an atheist president. The only people who voted for him last time lived in that strange, huge middle bit of America where everyone reads the bible. I remember seeing the graph on tv..

I don't think the United States is gonna have an Atheist president or any non Christian president as long as the Fundamentalist/Evangelical, Conservative Christians are voting. They will see to it that it doesn't happen.

there won't be an atheist president because most of americans are christians. if a christian candidate would run against an atheist one, no matter what political status the christian would win because, for some reason as much as our founding fathers may be rolling in their graves, this country is still split by religion.

Finland had an atheist president. Thats the only one I know of off the top of my head. And the obvious ones like China, USSR, Cuba...

I think it will be at least 30 or 40 years before we have one in the USA.

No we have not. I don't know about other countries, but america hasn't had a presidant of anyother faith besides christian,

except Kennedy, he was catholic.

But......
You know, I have my faith, But I really think an atheist presidant would do some good,
We are suposed to seperate church from state, and an atheist would do that.
