you know who i'm talking about; the self procclaimed jesusfreaks. Now i'm wondering, if christians think being obsessed with jesus is a problem because it takes away your own self identity. Like those people who can't even take a drink of water without thinking of jesus or the bible.

Do you think jesus wants you to be obsessed with him and not live your life the way god created you to be or whatever.

The thing we need to realize is that Jesus gave away his own identity to God. So, those that are attached to Jesus as "their Savior" need to realize that Jesus did not ask us to do that. He asked us to give our lives to God.

Jesus did say, "I AM the Truth, I AM the Way, and I AM the Life." But, if we evaluate that phrase carefully, we will see that the important part is the "I AM" and not who said it.

Just some thoughts...

And, as a reply to NeoFrehley above::
The word "hate" in Luke 14:26 does not mean the same thing we equate it to in today's time and age. Hate, in that passage, is meant to mean a relative disregard for the things named -in comparison- with our attitude toward God.

In other words, all that passage says is:: Place God above everything and everyone in your life.

And, if we realize that everything and everyone IS God in expression, we will see that we must see Him first, then what He is filling. (i.e. parents, wife, children, etc...)

It's like being a Trekkie, a Star Warrior, a hobbit, Naruto or any other role-playing game. The story is so cool you want everyone to play along.

Christians are called to "empty" themselves and let Christ "live" within them. But they also say that in marriage, two people become "one". People still have brains and wills. The idea is to cooperate with the plan, to take the wider view and go about "building the Kingdom" of justice and peace, not to act out Bible stories.

One of the best recent ideas I've seen is: "What Would Jesus Do?" Properly done, it forces the Christian to think about the consequences of their intentions, so that they will adapt them to the current reality, rather than applying outdated responses to new problems. Of course, most people just buy the "WWJD" bracelets and call that good enough. Being a fan and buying the souvenirs is so much easier than actually living.

Show a little compassion. Some people have been so damaged by sin and abuse that Jesus is all the hope and help they have to hang on to. Would you be the one to cut the thread of their faith and make them utterly destitute and without hope?
I had a friend whose dad would be the hell out of him for getting home 2 minutes late from school and any other reason he could find. He learned to chant Jesus' name until he felt hopeful and strong enough to face a new day or hour for that matter.
So, trying to become "normal and healthy" after being abused your whole life is a challenge for people. They can only hope to live their lives the way God created them to.

You can be too obsessed with Jesus and there is a fine line between admiring Jesus and being too obsessed with Him. A lot of Jesus freaks are hypocrites who go and shove their Christian ideals down other people, namely Atheists throats. I am a Christian, but I am not a Jesus freak, even though I admire Jesus very much. I don't go telling people they will go to hell if they don't accept my ideas or if they don't love Jesus because that is very hypocritical.

Why do you ask whether or not we live our lives the way the God you don't believe in created us to?

Every single person on this earth either believes in God or doesn't. There is no in between. If you believe in God you're still human and subject to your own flesh, which has sin in it, the first sin being pride or being the final authority in your life. Those to whom God is the final authority become more and more willing, the more experience they are brought through by God, to let him rule in their lives all the time. But the main reason that he's on our minds all the time is because He is Love, and we love because He first loved us.

From my study of Jesus & the bible, I think that Jesus would want you to go on living your life, and to use his teachings as a guide on how to deal with people - through love and charity. I think Jesus would freak out a bit on how some people are obsessive with him and religion.

Christians like Jesus because He is the salvation from the woes of the world.

What's the whole point of salvation? Check this: God at the
beginning of time sets up laws, scientific laws, gravity,
etc. He also sets up a basic law of obedience: love God and
love your neighbor. Man broke these two laws (the core of
the Ten Commandments). All of us break these laws. God has
already said if you don't follow these laws you will be put
to death. But since He loves His creation, He doesn't want
to destroy them. He wants a way to save them. But how?
Sacrifice. Executing the consequence but on someone else.
But who could be worthy enough to be sacrified for billions
of people since the beginning of time? God. So He went to
earth, and died for the sins of man.

All He asks now is for you to accept that. That is
salvation. He doesn't want you to pull up a list of things
so you can be 'Christian'. He just wants you to accept that
He died for you and that your sins are forgiven when you ask
of it to be.

Now how about attitudes and following laws and
regulations and all this jazz. You have to see God as a
friend rather than a cop. Just for an example, if you
hang out with friends that smoke all the time, you are
influenced to do so yourself and might take up smoking.
In the same way, if you hang out with God and people that
believe in Him, you will be influenced to live that kind of
life. The change is progressive, and to some people
instant. But it all starts out with befriending God.

The bible commands that you empty yourself. As it says "For me to die is gain." We are to die to our old ("sinful") self so that Christ can live in us.

At least thats what I was taught when I was a fundy. Creepy huh?

I've always thought this explained why fundy Christians take attacks on Jesus SO personally. Because we're "attacking" the being they've replaced their personality with. :(

It is my belief that it's ok to think of Him always but wrong to insist others do. I mean if we had a bunch of people who really acted like Him and performing miracles then it would be great but sadly we have people who think following Him is demanding others believe as them. He was never like that. He is a gentleman and the only ones He was angry toward were religious officials.
