You want to shop around go to a few different place to compare price and area. After you decided were you are moving they will normally give you information what to do after signing the contract. Normally calling the water, gas, electric company and setting up an account and letting them know when you are moving in. Also if you are going to get a landlines telephone or internet you will have to call that company also. Many apartments only allow certain company for cable/sat. so you will have to make sure who can go with. Also another thing is call and get renters insurance. This is VERY important if there was every damage to your stuff it will not be covered unless you have renters insurance. It's normally on a few dollars a month and very well worth it. The day of moving you will do a walk through, check all your closets, doors, facets, toilets...you want to make sure everything is working. Then you are ready to move in.
Here is a good list from Bed Bath and Beyond. They also include some things you could want in your apartment. It was a nice reference when moving out on my own. You have to adjust it to your taste. Good Luck!

first thing to do is sit down and budget and make sure you can afford everything! that's a lot that goes in that people don't budget for like groceries, electric bill, cable, internet, etc. once you've figured your budget try rent.com or apartments.com and you can pick places within your budget with the ammentities you want (like a balcony, do they accept pets, laundry, etc.)
once you find a place, find out what the apartment complex covers in terms of utilities, if anything at all. find out if there's a washer and dryer in your apt or in the apt complex. and also make a moving plan! can you do it yourself or do you need to hire a company? if you do it yourself, do you need to rent a truck? do you need people to help? do you have enough furniture? do you have too much and need to put some into storage? does the apt. offer storage space? if you have too much what furniture will you use?
and a few extra things that i learned on my moving day, make sure to have food ready to move in cuz you guys will be hungry from all the unpacking! and unpack the toilet paper first!

get some numbers and call around, make sure you ask things like what floor the apt will be on and also about laundry. With children you probably dont want them walking up and down steps and it would be convienant if it had washer/dryer hookups....what location are you in? with out that i cant be much help, but just call around find a good reliable land lord, ask as many questions as you can and good luck.

well first things first. Do you have any furniture?? doesn't seem like it. If you can- save money and bargain shop for house furniture. here are some great places where you can ge the best deals on furniture etc.
Big Lots- Sofas, some times even mattresses
Ross, Marshalls, Burlington Coat Factory- bath towels, bath essensials, bedding stuff, decorative frames & gadgets, Dish sets, pot sets, baby furniture, Baby stuff, ( i found a really nice crib at burlington for my coming baby for $200)
Wickes, IKEA- sofa beds, bed sets, armoirs, Dresser, Baby furniture
that's all you'll need. it wil be costy at first but if you can keep from getting anything on credit from big company's like Best Buy, furniture stores etc.

this might sound stupid, but DON'T FORGET THE TOILET PAPER!!! save your money. don't fight over the petty stuff. don't get something out of your means. love each other. once you move in with someone, it does get harder, but if you love them, it's well worth it. congrats on the new apt. and good luck

why didnt you ask a friend or family this questions. Besides, if you dont know what to do, that means you are probably not ready to have a place of your own
